Wake Tennis 2017-2018

I looked for the live video yesterday but couldn't find it. Is there one at our complex?

The comeback win last nite vs Vandy is as great a gut check comeback in any sport I've seen in my 50+ years of following Wake Forest Sports. Down 3-2 and down in the two remaining matches we tied it at 3 only to be down on court 4 (Cunga) 1-4. For him to come back and win that set and match in a tiebreak 7-4 was outstanding. That was some heart, grit and determination on display last night. Kudos to the team and coaches for a phenomenal comeback win.

I agree nva, it was a really good comeback.

My favorite Wake tennis wins of the past few years are the ACC championship (4-3 against UVA) to break their 9 year streak, and at UNC when they were number 1. We came back from 1-3 down to win 4-3.

You are right rafi! Was the UNC one the time the cry baby laid on the court when we clinched it? What was up with the chair umpire last nite giving Petros winner shot the heave ho which would have won set 2 because of noise? The noise was from court 4. Is that why Bresky was so upset?

If we’re thinking is the same point there was definitely noise coming from behind Petros’s court when it looked like he hit a clean winner. Vandy kid made a great effort just to get it back. Happens in every single grand slam tournament match on a show court where the crowd reacts prematurely. Since the same chair ump had already yelled at the students during doubles I thought the Vandy kid used that as a bit of gamesmanship to play up the noise as actual interference in order to draw a call. Bresky has every right to be pissed.

Wake men remain #1 in the polls, while the women jump up to 16/21, depending on the poll.

Seraphim/Dempster won their first doubles match in the Dallas Challenger pro tournament.

Thinking about the matches last week, our weaknesses were at 2 doubles and 4/6 singles. I would like to see the following doubles and singles: Seraphim/Dempster, Mansouri/Gojo, Botzer/Petros -- Gojo, Petros, Mansouri, Seraphim, Botzer, Solomon/Zlobinsky, Cungu.

Would put Cungu at 6 singles above Solomon/Zlobinsky. He didn't have his best stuff against Vandy but won anyway with all the pressure on him there in the third set - especially down a break.
Doubles will take some time to figure out - hard to argue splitting up Mansouri/Seraphim when they were so good last year. Having said that Seraphim/Dempster are in the main draw of a Challenger after winning that qualifying tournament & and leaves Petros and Skander who won the fall ITAs.... not sure what you'd do at 3-doubles. Bresky will get it figured out - they've got some time before the next match.

Good thoughts. Cungu is good, and I think he'll be even better outdoors. He just strikes me as the perfect 6 singles player - a super consistent grinder.

Botzer and Petros are really solid at 3 doubles. We just need a solid 2 doubles team. Gojo strikes me as a bit of a slow starter, which is hard when doubles goes so fast.

Upensky with the big last point. Was bummed when he left.

Did more information ever come out about that? I remember he had some not super subtle tweets/instas/facebooks about his teammates when he left.

He likely wanted to play higher in the lineup. He's playing #1 for Pepperdine.

dude was always losing the first set and winning in three

He's a good player, but he was in the right spot of the lineup given how deep Wake is. He played really poorly our final match against UNC in the NCAAs, and apparently it was known he was transferring at that point. I heard a Pepperdine coach was even there watching his match. Not cool. Uspensky lost 2,0 in single in that match, even though he had beaten the UNC player 2,1 earlier in the year. Uspensky also lost in doubles.

That unc match sucked all the way around. Seemed that Dennis got injured that match if I recall correctly.

Also there are plenty of coaches around when their teams lose to watch the rest of the tournament. The individual tournament doesn't start until the team competition is over. That's a nothingburger.
