Next Wake Forest Basketball Coach...

RD: 4 years and $5.6 million isn't a "fair shot." He needs 5 years and $7.4 million to really be sure.

RC: A competent AD would let Manning either fall on his face next year or take the program another step forward.

Same thing.

RD: And that, if after the end of that 5 years and $7.4 million is up, Manning proves that he can achieve some minimal "historically competitive" results by getting us into the tournament again, he deserves yet another few years and a few million more $$ so that we can further assess whether he really is the below average coach we all currently think him to be.

RC: If he does the former then you fire him, declare a fresh start for the program, and hire a guy who you believe can quickly get you back to the NCAAT and keep you there.

If he does the latter (by getting back to the tournament and landing a 2019 class that builds on his relative success in 17 and 18) then you are in a much stronger hiring position and can decide whether to give him another year or find an upgrade to leverage the talent already in the fold.

A round of 32 appearance and a top 20 class are probably the breakeven points for keeping him vs thanking him and sending him on his way.

Same thing.

I know you’re smarter than that.

Also glad to have Ph on record that a Round of 32 appearance and a top 20 class = minimal “historically competitive” results. It’s rose-colored revisionist history but at least it’s something concrete.

RC, there's nobody here who believes if Wake makes the tournament next year and loses in the first round, you'll say "OK, Manning's got to go."

Nobody thinks that.

If it’s as a 9 or lower seed or if the 2019 class is a dud then of course I will. I’ve consistently stated as much for a while now. I can’t help it if you believe your own bullshit.

Looks like the Wake Will Lead (new name and extension of the "Wake Will" campaign) is looking for $1 Billion by 2020. I think that will be the Natty O triumphal ride into the sunset.

Will be a lot easier to raise that money if Hatch gets US News back to top 25 and Wellman gets someone to restore the basketball program. Why donate to figureheads who are getting half-ass results? Some things are good, but others not so much. Want to lead Wake into the next decade, show some measurable improvements in areas that are slacking.

I'm sure nobody cares but since you asked; athletics wise:
1. Keep football at the level its at (Im very happy with the last 2 seasons)
2. Beat Stanford in soccer for once, while winning at the level they have been (god I hate Stanford fans and them winning on our campus)
3. Win more than 20 games and make the round of 32 in basketball (as previously stated here)
4. Keep mens tennis and golf elite (no concerns with these programs)
5. No Volleyball coach scandals.

Academics wise:
1. Expand the engineering program in Innovation Quarter (tech is the future, especially biotech)
2. Get back to US News top 25 (not far off, but haven't been there since 2012)
3. Improve the B-school rankings, since they eliminated the full-time MBA and it should be easier to focus on what's left.

Are those ultimate goals/standards or immediate next steps. Seems like a mix of both.

I like these and think all are extremely attainable.

Only additions being to number one and three - being right in the thick of things for an ACC Championship regularly and getting there/winning it once every 5-ish years (I think that’s doable) and making runs in the tournament 1-2+ times every 5 years (past round of 32). I’m sure you think the same or close.

EDIT: I see now you said in 12-months so I’m sure long term these would be included.

I’m hesitant to just say Sweet 16. What if Hoard is just that good and drags Manning through the postseason then leaves?

I just want to see players improve, good rotations, and defense. If we do that, we won’t play on Tuesday in March and win at least two games. That’s a reasonable goal.

Top 9 finish in ACC.
Non-First Four NCAA Appearance.

At least two wins between them.

And look like a well coached team in the process. These are reasonable goals.

I agree that all of these goals are reasonable (hopefully attainable) and what we should expect from a head coach at Wake. Also an eye on recruiting and maintaining a top 5-7 ranked class in the ACC.

The last sentence is where Danny needs to show his chops. The staff has reputation for working really hard on the recruiting trail. They need to get the commits to show the results of the hard work. It's still early, but not very early. The 2018 class mostly made official visits and verbal commitments in September, less than two months before signing day. In the upcoming months the staff needs to get some good players from cool to warm to hot to come to Wake.

I agree with everything about this quote... Manning needs to be gone and I'm sure we will improve based on more talent but coaching fundamentals is something Manning apparently fails to know how to do.... Our players are not being coached up. Watching Loyola box out, rebound and hustle is what I would like to see. If we did the small things well and we still lost games I would be ok with that. Of course I want us to win, but even if we were losing the right way I would be much better with.

There was a false alarm of a shooter in the Miller Center today. You can't make this stuff up.
