The ACC - 2018-19 Basketball

Further, I notice on here that some of you are saying that there are other answers on how to get basketball back near the top. I also notice I'm the only one giving actual solutions.

Two anecdotes I've shared before about the Joel:

JJ Redick said, on ESPN during one of the SportCenter puff-pieces about him, that the Joel was the toughest/his least favorite place to play in the country - that was also back when the Duke-Maryland rivalry was hot (they chanted they fucked his sister).

A UK grad and his son accompanied me and my dad to the UNC game at the Joel in early 2006 when they were #2 and we were #3. They go to Rupp all the time and have traveled the country to watch UK play (as well as other teams). They stated that that game was the best college basketball atmosphere they'd ever experienced.

When Wake is good, the Joel is an awesome place to watch college basketball. I do agree that the overall college basketball product, other than the NCAA tournament, is trending down in a big way.

My favorite thing that has ever happened was when a Duke fan held up a sign that read "JJ Is Redickulous" so a Maryland fan made his own sign that read "-Ly Gay" and stood next to him. I still have that picture saved in my phone.

Why do you keep saying El Paso.....??

Because if we keep winning 8 games a year in football it's inevitable that we'll eventually wind up in the Sun Bowl. And for some reason it makes sense to DR that we can't be pretty decent in football and have a good basketball team.

Yeah, I know it's a tier one ACC bowl - just strange he uses an example we have yet to play in. I agree we are capable of doing both.

Yes, you have heard me clearly. My target is you people. It is not only condescending--it is direct and real. We lose in men's basketball because of our own horrible decisions made by our alums. We have chosen football and El Paso over the Final Four.

It is a direct & very personal attack. I hope it effectuates change long term. In the meantime, Im looking forward to a successful 8 win football season and hearing Naz celebrate when the men's cross country team wins the ACC.

Cheers.

Have we actually played in the El Paso bowl? I'm pretty sure we've had really good bowl draws the last 20 years, sans Seattle.

THIS

Since it got dragged into this, GT's remodeling of the Thriller Dome is fantastic, it really is.

Our program is a dumpster fire despite good history, an absurd recruiting base and location advantage because our fans simply do not care much about the sport. Nothing will really change as long as we are a football school and athletic program through and through.

I don't think Wake has that problem, or that Wake's and GT's problems are similar.

I think the issue, at least for me, is that the Joel IS a tough place to play when we're really good (as your anecdotes note), but it's the years when we're not really good where a smaller/better building would be a benefit. Though I disagree with his tactics, among other things, I've always agreed with DR that Wake should build a better place to play it's basketball games. I attended the opening game at the Joel, have watched a lot of games there through a lot of highs and lows, and it has always felt too big and cavernous for Wake in anything but our absolute best years. I've also attended games at every other ACC stadium (pre-expansion), including Reynolds and Cole. We can, and should, do better.

slightly off topic - Dion Glover killed Georgia Tech basketball

Cremins brought him in to the be the next great one and done guard, he got hurt, Cremins couldn't recruit over him as everyone assumed he'd return to Tech following his injury but he went pro (killing two recruiting cycles), Cremins never recovered, Tech hired Hewitt and gave him a lifetime contract, death spiral ensued, the end

oh - and we're not getting a new arena unless someone wants to cough up $300 million or so

and we're probably not going to the final 4 in the next 20 years

so, one can take a "winning" side to this argument for 20 years from now by blaming the Joel

All it takes is 1 million dollars and some cheating on the recruiting trail. 250K to 4 top 25 prospects. Except thats not worth it. Leave that to desperate state schools with nothing else going for them besides basketball.

we don't need a new stadium

but we do need WES THE BEST MILLER

GT has a fantastic on-campus arena in the middle of Atlanta. It is the “perfect” size and easy to get to. I love going to games there.

But it’s still empty most of the time because the team sucks.

Love the GT arena. Does demonstate problems with club seats though.

I agree with the concept that the perfect home arena doesn’t guarantee success. I don’t agree that it doesn’t increase the chances significantly.

I patiently waited and asked nicely for 20 years for Wake hoops to implement the changes. They didn’t. I’m no longer going to be nice about it and haven’t been for about a year now.

I can be dismissed as wrong (and have been). Stop listening if you want. But I’m not going to stop.

Engineering school

If the only choices are basketball school or football school, though, it's definitely the latter (by perception and history).

GT alumn and fans most certainly do, and that's what matters in terms of developing any other sport. The reality is that it would be far easier for us to be a basketball power (ACC, Atlanta recruiting, name recognition, etc) than football in the modern era ... but we simply do not, as a group, care. And all the nice small on campus arenas in the world won't fix that problem.

Here's the forums from Stingtalk (the GT version of ogboards) ...

Wake does not have that issue, you seem to have others unrelated to ours.

UNC manages to get their best players to stay. That’s the key to winning.

“the narrative that they recruit flawed guys in order to keep them In college is silly.”

It is silly. That’s why I’ve never said that.

I have said that I think Roy does a good job of convincing his players to stay an extra year after they become draft prospects and getting one year from players who under the old system would have gotten drafted out of HS. Been that way since Roy got three years out of Felton, McCants, May and we got two out of Chris Paul.

To this point, Luke Maye is coming back for his senior season.

Wake lost a junior to the NBA who wasn't even All-ACC Honorable Mention and may lose another junior who was honorable mention.

Meanwhile, UNC keeps a 1st team All-ACC player who already won a national championship.

Minor omission.
