Be nice to have this guy back on D with some eligibility remaining. :)

He's got to be 65+ years old but he is could still probably play better than anyone we have now.

Our coordinator was just fired 4 games into a season. You might want to bring your full scorched concerns up with the head coach, not us.

Right, and in every single press conference where Clawson expresses frustration about the defense, he isn’t calling out Cohen. This isn’t hard. Cohen is a good DL coach, and seems to be a pretty good recruiter. I highly doubt he goes anywhere.

Cohen is an INCREDIBLE recruiter and has long ties with Clawson. Thinks it's inarguable the defensive line needs more penetration and production, but I'm confident Cohen and Clawson are good with each other.

Wow. Just catching up. Even though HE didn't hire the right DC, WE hired the right HC.

Clawson is the man.

Manning also needs to hire someone on his staff to coach D.

Thanks, Les. Felt like I was taking crazy pills for a second. The DL’s step back this year is perfectly understandable given the personnel losses of Dunn and Ejifor.

Is there anything stopping us from offering a replacement the position right now?

The only thing in the way would be that anybody worth hiring should be currently employed. I wouldn't want a guy who would bail on his team in mid season.

Wait until November or December to pry somebody loose from where they are now. Start looking at MAC, AAC and Conf USA schools with good defenses. Get a coordinator from one of them. Or get a position guy from another P5 school and promote him.

The more I think about it, if Clawson really really wanted to fire the defensive assistants, I think he would. I don't think he would keep someone just to keep them. He doesn't seem like a guy who could stomach mediocrity for 8 more games.

He could go in two directions. He could promote the new defensive analyst, Tom McEntire, and/or other quality control analysts or grad assistants to assistant coaches. Or he could hire some retired defensive coaches or assistants who got fired last year and task them with working with Cohen to get the defense out of a ditch. I'm sure he knows some old guys who could help like Gilmore is doing.

Wow. Accountability. At Wake Forest. Guess he didn't run this one by Wellman first... Good move by Clawson.

Maybe. Maybe not. In either case, he's addressing the problem at its source. From a purely practical matter, he can't fire half of his staff and keep a functioning football team the remainder of this season.
If he can obtain a very good DC, I feel Clawson will give him the latitude to form his own staff. I just hope he can find a highly qualified candidate to lead our defense. That's the big question mark IMHO.

I think Clawson would fire "half his staff" (actually only Hemphill (S), Sherrod (LB), and Crawford (CB)) at this point if he felt he had to to keep a functioning football team. And I explained two options for replacing them. These are drastic options, but this is a rough situation.

You have to wonder how the performance of our ex DC has affected decisions on the offense. Evidently we have been practicing against a sieve since Spring Football. How many false assumptions have been made? Balls of Steel Clawson now has to re think everything on the fly. At this point 6 wins may be in miracle territory.

Listening to ESPNU radio this morning on XM while driving to work. They were talking about Notre Dame and how our defense is a "trainwreck," and that is why Wake fired their defensive coordinator. A person name "Ronnie" from North Carolina called in, a Wake alum, and said how embarrassed he was that we fired our defensive coordinator only 4 games into the season. He said, "we're Wake Forest, what are we going to do, it's embarrassing Clawson would do this." So, "Ronnie" if you are a participant on this board, go cuddle your teddy bear and it will all be okay. What a pansy!
