___________ will be our Defensive Coordinator in '19

I guess that's true. I don't know the terms of the new deal, but he was only making ~$450,000/year under the last one. However, he's been involved with App over 25 years as a player or coach and was mentored by Moore, who was there for 24 years. Money may talk more loudly, but I don't see him leaving for UNC this year. If timing were different and UNC weren't a dumpster fire, I could see it a lot more (maybe will be UNC's coach after their next coach).

I didn’t know he’d just inked an extension. But that may prove the point that App is trying to hang onto him because they know UNC’s job may come open. And as for waiting till a program isn’t a dumpster fire, most coaching changes occur because there are problems to be addressed, so I don’t know how long and for what ideal situation he would wait.

Satterfield’s recruiting relationships would stay intact and in fact only be strengthened. UNC just had a QB drafted second and has access to massive resources. Not to mention no academic accountability. Seems like the perfect situation if he has aspirations higher than the Dollar General Bowl.

David Blackwell from ECU. Last yeah ECU Was ranked dead last in the fbs in defense, 129. I know they’re not having the most stellar year so far but there has already been drastic improvement to the defense. Currently East Carolina is sitting at 24th overall in total defense and he’s only been there since january.

My top 3 choices would be

Diron Reynolds
Dean Hood
Ruffin McNeil

Also, would love to see Chip Vaughn back as a secondary coach being groomed to take over as the DC down the line

They have played an FCS team, UNC, and USF...lets pump the breaks on this guy a bit before thinking they truly have a top 25 defense

Honestly, at this point how do you feel Wake’s defense would fair against those teams?

And I know it’s still early in the year and I’m not trying to say the have a top 25 defense. I’m just saying the man is making changes right away.

ECU held UNC and USF to fewer points than other teams. Hell, Tech gave up 49 to USF although two TDs were on returns.

Always really liked Dean Hood and thought that when he left that was the beginning of the end for Grobe. I believe his wife was from Kentucky and that may prove to be a problem as far as getting him to leave KY and come back to WF. I knew several of the players who played for him and who had a tremendous amount of respect for him. Outstanding coach.

Someone who spent time on Gary Patterson’s staff at TCU. Patterson was/is a major 4-2-5 innovator.

Both Brad White (outside LBs) and Dean Hood (special teams and DBs) are defensive assistants at Kentucky under Mark Stoops. Neither one is the DC.

Kentucky is having their best year in decades and the staff is one of the best paid in college. Both guys may be out of our price range, at least in order to get them to come back here.

White and Hood are both under contract until 2020 (basically through the 2018 and 2019 season). Hood makes 350 this year and will make 375 next year. White makes 375 this year and will make 400 next year.

I hope we have co-defensive coordinators Dave Cohen and Lyle Hemphill for the 2019 season, coming off a successful interim job of fixing this season's defense enough for a third straight winning season and bowl victory. And even if that scenario doesn't play out, as long as the defense shows some improvement, we could get one or both of those two since I don't think Clawson will go out and hire another 'new to him' defensive coordinator from another program. I'm sure he feels 'burnt' by hiring Sawvel before the 17 season.

On paper it was a good hire, but just didn't work out in real life. I'm sure if he does hire outside of Wake it will be someone who he knows well through the coaching circles.
