Wake Forest Offseason Basketball Thread: Deacs in Inaugural Myrtle Beach Invitational

Yep, and I bet Ernie and Odom could get Ernie's old assistant, Joel Justus, to leave Calipari's staff and come back home. After all Joel's son is named Deacon.

How about we stop talking about hiring people just because they have Wake connections and expand our talent pool a bit?

I'm not saying your premise is wrong, but the folks I know from Kentucky have absolutely raved about Joel Justus.

Joel is coaching and recruiting and chasing championships every year at Kentucky, but is not good enough for mighty Wake Forest? Unfortunately, we're just having some fun, we know it's not going to happen.

I would bet that Joel will be an ACC, or equivalent, head coach some day, and he has numerous connections to Wake Forest. Connections mean a lot, you know.

Stop. I know y’all have an obsessive need to spin anything surrounding our program as an indictment of Danny Manning (while rarely mentioning the root of the problem) but can we refrain from just spewing uncorroborated accusations about a tragedy to score internet points?

So important to keep people from "winning points on the internet!" Oh no! What the fuck does that even mean? Racer is just using that last part for dramatic emphasis (albeit a bit strong, but who cares?), which you don't seem to ever filter through your weird, obsessive message board ombudsman complex. Just shut up.

Oh no is this RoboHell 2.0 or whatever the hell it was back on the old board that would just post things robotically irrespective of the topic?

You're so bad you're starting to repeat yourself in your obsession to "win internet points!"

FWIW, I also think we are underestimating DM's impact on lineups. In theory we should probably lean on a group of 6-7 guys who play the majority of the time, but I can pretty much guarantee you that DM won't play the most effective lineups for the majority of the game. This not being the case, Hoard becoming a real star, Sarr dominating the post and BC playing out of his mind with Chaundee shooting a very high 3 pt. % is the only thing that will keep us from not losing by an average of 15-20 in conference play.

Also, is there anyone who thinks DM will be retained if we have the same or worse year this year as we did last year? Months ago it seemed like the answer was a resounding 'no' but now I'm not so sure...

I don't think that someone with the title "Special Assistant to the Head Coach" is allowed by NCAA rules to speak (or whisper) into the ear of the head coach during a game. He also could not coach during a practice. NCAA rules allow "only" three assistant coaches per team and Wake Forest already has three assistant coaches. So how much impact can such a "special assistant" really have?

Moreover, does anyone believe that the problem with the basketball team is due not having enough coaches?

Not enough good coaches.

Yea, I think zero good coaches is too few, but that's just me.

Doesn't have to be during games or practices that Nestor speaks to Danny. Probably best done in coaching offices when game plans and strategy are worked out. Also when planning practice, such as which combinations and players work against which other players. Ernie may also see something on film of opponents that might otherwise might be missed. Lots of ways he can help without being on the bench during games.

I imagine that Nestor would be able to talk with Manning during halftime, which is where, often times, our adjustments (or lack thereof) have harmed us.

Are we going with the grey/silver Wake | Number | Forest as our main home unis this season? Most of the recruiting material and the publicity shots I'm seeing have that uni design or the black unis. I'm probably missing something.

I mean, they look super cool, at least, so we have that going for us.

Let's get this out of the way: seems like a net positive for Wake Forest basketball in the short term. Nestor is a solid dude who can coach.

That said, this is such a Wake Forest thing to do. Feels like another Wellman attempt to meddle in the program. Rearranging the deck chairs hoping that it's somehow going to keep the ship afloat. Couldn't get anyone else to join the staff, so had to go pull at the heart strings of a retired man with strong Wake ties. Fill the staff with guys who are popular with long time Deacons as additional cover for Wellman when he decides not to fire Manning after another atrocious year. Between Chill and Nestor, that's a strong attempt to pacify the big DC donors who remember fondly the days when those guys lead Wake to greatness.

As I read around the Wake Forest web, particularly the more rosy glassed groups on FB and 247, it appears the Wellman plan is working out as well as could be expected. Many are super excited to have Nestor back and are looking forward to big improvements as a result. Lots of reminiscing about the good ole days. No one is stopping to ask why we are paying Manning millions of dollars and then hiring an old, retired consultant to attempt to make up for his glaring weaknesses. Weaknesses that Manning himself hasn't admitted to or bothered to try to improve over the course of the last 4 seasons.

Strong Wake connections and being talented (all those guys mentioned are talented coaches) at coaching seems like a home run to me, but it will never happen so it doesn't really matter. Justus has as much passion for Wake Forest basketball as the beloved Randolph Childress does.
