2019 offical College Football thread

Motivated or not, UGA needed to win that game. If they want to signal that they belong up w/ Alabama & Clemson (and even Ohio State), they need to win non-playoff bowl games. A really bad look for UGA last night.

Having said that, I don't understand the SEC hate... Other than because people like to just hate on the best conference. A mediocre UF team destroyed a Michigan team that was a shoo-in for the playoff on Thanksgiving. LSU beat UCF. UK beat Penn State. A&M blew out NCSU. Auburn destroyed Purdue. Aside from UGA, the SEC teams that lost weren't any of the "elite" SEC programs. You're going to argue that the SEC is a one-team league because Vandy, South Carolina, Mizzou, & Miss State lost bowl games? Who cares?

I'd actually argue the opposite. Yeah, Bama is clearly the #1 program in college football. I hate UGA, but they are on the next tier behind Bama(1) & Clemson (1A). Add in UF & Texas A&M looking like they'll be Top 10ish teams going forward and you have a pretty formidable stable of teams at the top... More than any other conference, to be sure.

The 1-team league in college football has been the ACC for the last few years. Never more apparent than this season. Yikes.
The ACC has been pretty damn bad since FSU's decline. And Clemson has certainly taken advantage of it. Aside from the Pac-12 (if any one team was actually good), they probably have the easiest path to the playoff every year.

So who in the ACC helped and hurt themselves the most in the bowls? I think State hurt themselves badly. I was telling friends early in the game that State is one of those programs with a surprising number of NFL players including almost every starting QB since 2000. Yet they can’t break 8-9 wins. Then they got blown out during people’s NYE parties.

UVa is the only team that helped themselves. Wins over Temple and Memphis are solid but don’t move the needle. Getting to 8 wins was good for UVa. Overall it was a disappointing bowl slate for the ACC

Tough to argue anything other than the above.

I will say that the bowls were probably a non-event in terms of momentum for most teams... Duke & Syracuse got good wins, but will now have to move on from QBs that were a large part of their success this season. GT & Miami had bad losses, but will be moving on with new coaches anyway. Virginia Tech had a nightmare season (youth and injuries), but look to be in good shape for 2019 and beyond.

Wake Forest probably helped itself... Game could have easily been a loss, but 7-6 (and a bowl victory) feels like a good result when you look back at the injuries and how shitty the team played for stretches of the season.

Pitt probably had the weirdest season. Played in the ACC Championship game, but lost last 3 games to finish at 7-7.

It will be interesting to see how Babers does without Dungey. I think if he has a strong year next year, he’s gone.

SEC again proves to be the strongest league just by seeing 4 of their teams playing on New Years Day alone and they go 2-2 in some awesome games. Plus they have Alabama left to play Clemson for the title [so give them 5 New Year's teams]

NC State for us again shows their weakness both at the end of the season when they skidded by losing to us and as our supposed 3rd best team getting blown out by the 5th or 6th best team in the SEC. LSU loses everybody on defense, gets down 14-3 against #8 and undefeated UCF but battles back to put them in their place. Wuffies just fold like a cheap tent.

Deacs help themselves by having another winning season and doing it without Dortch and perservering to get there with all the injuries and DC firing.
Duke had a great season and shows there is a lot left in Coach Cut and his style of football.
Syracuse has stepped up to the upper echelon of the Atlantic Division, taking the place of FSU & Louisville [but watch out for them with Satterfield as coach]
UVA with Bronco has now shown they are a force in the Coastal and people better watch out. That QB is one tough dude to catch.
Not worried about UNC or FSU for a while.

That’s a bit of an overstatement. Yes this was a down year, although 11 bowl eligible teams still looks good even though most were 6-7 win teams. Two years ago the ACC was #1/2 in most computer metrics with the Atlantic being the toughest division in football.

I think Wake definitely helped itself.
First, We ended the year strong (3 wins in 4 games against solid competition) so we have momentum going into next season. Three straight bowl wins is pretty nice.
Second, The bowl game itself, while it was a very slim win, had a very exciting final few minutes. I was surprised at the number of texts and comments I received from people about that game......people that I never thought would watch a Wake game. We obviously got some attention.
Lastly, even though it wasn't the team, having our coach as an analyst on a panel for the Clemson- ND game was good publicity as I'm sure he impressed most viewers.

NC State football would probably lose to Cleveland State, no matter how many NFL players they have.

To all those prognosticators who picked Wake Forest to finish 6th in the Atlantic, I have one thing to say, SUCK IT. We finished 5th.

SEC teams play on New Years Day because that’s when SEC bowl games are scheduled. The ACC can’t play in the Sugar, Outback, or Citrus.

The SEC isn't doing much to fight the perception that they're a one team league. Their other wins have come against the Big Ten, UCF, and State.

If by one team league you mean only one team at the level of Alabama, then yeah. But considering that six SEC teams are going to finish in the top 15, calling the SEC a one team league is pretty silly.

Disagree! If they're "disinterested" in a meaningless consolation game it means they have arrived as a legit contender.
