I loved Babylon Berlin, especially Liv Lisa Fries as Lotte. I read the first of the books and it was alright, too. I was on a Berlin kick, but I haven't gotten to the Isherwood stories on which Cabaret is based, yet.

I should probably go ahead and admit that I've never hooked up with a Nazi, or even a Neo-Nazi.

yeah but with the way things are nowadays, can you guarantee all past exploits aren't Nazis today?

Sweet. We didn't have the second book in the library when I read the first one, but we have it now so I just recalled it. Sorry whoever has it checked out! Better finish that shit!

check out Slumberland by Paul Beatty (of The Sellout fame -- first American to win the Man Booker)

set in Berlin and real riot -- I think you'd dig all the music elements of the book too

I'm glad that Spotify exists to remind me that Marquee Moon exists separately from our resident troll.

I’ll do it.

I also loved the Bryan Ferry cameo in Babylon Berlin.

I wonder what it would be like to hook up with a Nazi (or Neo-Nazi) though. Would she be bothered that I'm circumcised ?

Guys, I gotta tell you, I've been going to my kids' youth sporting events as a coach or spectator for 10 years now and the two church league basketball refs we had Saturday afternoon were the worst I've ever seen. I think I might have embarrassed my mother-in-law.

Dude, I was a great IM soccer ref. Easy money too. Should I study today a 4:00 or go ref the SOPHs versus the med school students for $10 ? Those girls had no idea howto play soccer but wer playing for the overall society IM championship. Very easy reffing. Med school girls talked smack and called them "softies."

Made the mistake once of reffing a match between the PIKAs and Sigma Chis. Couldn't wait to blow the final whistle.

What's a good, preferably visual, intro to WW2?

Who's the audience (grade level/background knowledge, etc) and what are you specifically interested in teaching or learning? Reasons for the war, the European politics, fallout of WWI and the Great Depression? Or just a general basic overview?

Not exactly what you're looking for, but the Netflix show Babylon Berlin is a pretty sweet, high-budget German show about the social and political forces at hand during the rise of Nazism, the spread of Communism, and the end of the Weimar Republic, set against the backdrop of the cultural explosion of 20s Berlin around sexuality, feminism, etc. as it leads up to WWII.

Really good stuff.

I tried to start it to other day but couldn't make it past the first 10 mins as the English dubbing while the actors were speaking German was horrendous.

Rewatched Inglourious Basterds for the umpteenth time Friday night. That’s a good accurate telling of the end of the war.

It's interesting how we're still doing movies about WWII in Europe, but not nearly as much in the Pacific. I guess there were a lot of glorification movies about the Pacific theater shortly after the war.

My great uncle was in charge of temproarily burying bodies from all over the Pacific in Guam. They'd later exhume them and send them home.

He did that so Adam Levine could dance around with no shirt and a bunch of tattoos.
