Ongoing US GOP Debacle Thread: Seditious Republicans march toward authoritarianism

It seems like the only think that Ilhan has left out of her tweets about Jews is a mention of horns coming out of their heads.

I can’t believe you hypocrites are saying the hypnotism comments are NBD. Plus, if a congressperson had previously tweeted “may Jesus awaken the people” you would be apoplectic. Separation of church and state!!!11!!

And LOL at the idea she didn’t know she was repeating a racist trope. Maybe Northam didn’t know donning blackface / KKK garb was racist either? Come on. She knew exactly what she was saying. Just because you’ve never heard of a racist meme doesn’t mean others haven’t.

She wan't even in the MN state legislature yet when she made those comments, and politicians tweet about Jesus all the time. Thanks for admitting that it's the Allah part that really bothers you though.

Just like the Pubes own the racist, rapist, pedophile, treasonous, carpetbagger in the WH?

Best President you’ll ever experience and just think.. you got about 6 more years of pure pleasure ahead of you. :)

I am shocked that Lectro calls people hypocrites yet throws all his weight behind a man in the White House who has a proven track record of racism, with the most recent example coming this weekend.

Shocked.

Once again.... Democrat leadership denounced Omar and her comments. I ask again; has Republican leadership called out the president for his racist weekend tweet?

I didn’t know about the hypnosis thing either. What she said is at worst, very wrong, at best, insensitive, yet either way she apologized. Thankfully she is young and still has much to learn, shows a tendency to conciliate, and, you know, apologizes. Unlike Trump.

4 pages of ESPN articles that mention the word "svengali", which is basically the same trope. I'm guessing most of the writers didn't know its origins. It's not the same as blackface-there are some things that it's believable to not know, other things less so.

Lol. Yeah, you got me. Junebug the noted hater of religion.

My response came out way more dickish than I meant it to, and I apologize. However, I do think much of the conservative outrage over the initial post was more over "Allah" than "hypnotize".

This guy summed up the ignorant racist Omar

“Omar is an attractive woman until she opens her mouth to speak. Then she becomes an imposition on one’s tolerance for bafflegab, condescension and self-loving excess.”

She's been there less than two months and feels confident enough to put out such bigotry and hate.

The way to stop her from having a track record of hate is not to accept it or condone it.

As I said, this wasn't an accident and is how she feels.

The hypnotize tweet was from 2012, before she was elected to any office, so I don't view it as throwing her political weight behind the statement.

The statements were anti-semitic, mainly because impact is greater than intent when talking about racism/anti-semitism, etc. The harm that impacts the Jewish community by words that play on anti-semitic tropes outweighs whatever intent is behind the words. She may not have realized that they were tropes (she may have as well). It may be a result of parroting language she's heard/acting on internal bias without realizing that it's anti-semitic - again, this does not absolve responsibility for the tweets because impact > intent, and the ability to determine if something is anti-semitic is solely with the Jewish community, not myself, Rep. Omar, or anyone else.

I will say, I think her response is good. I wish she had acknowledged impact rather than just restating that it wasn't her intent, but for her response to be "thank you for calling out and educating me on the painful history of anti-Semitic tropes" and "unequivocally apologize" is much better than trying to explain away the tweets, deny their harmfulness, or deflect blame. This is much closer to the what the model should be when confronted with saying/doing something that is racist. Of course, validity is given to this response only in what she does going forward.

I simply do not understand how it can be considered anti-Semitic to point out that there is big lobbying group spending large amounts of money to keep American politicians on-side with Israel. Pointing out the lobbyist money behind any position taken by an American politician is absolutely fair game. Seems like a clear example of faux pearl-clutching to ding an opponent, especially coming from Republicans who have absolutely tolerated much, much worse out of their colleagues, President, and his allies for years.

The hypnotism thing from 7 years ago... OK. I was not aware that hypnotism was a loaded issue w/r/t Jews but I learn new stuff every day.

Dirk, you are a believer in the idea that if you repeat your lies long enough then they will somehow become true.

But that only works on your ignorant peers. I hope you continue on with your schtick for it shows you have no ideas and no party.

You and the Radical Green Dems are headed for a colossal defeat in 2020. I am trying to prepare you for that imminent reality because I am afraid for you. I mean if you are going to melt like this during term one..my God man,one shudders to think of the blubbering wreck you’ll become after 2020.

This is how I see it as well. I still haven't seen any article describe a history of the word hypnotism as it related to antisemitism, but I'll trust its something I'm just not aware of. I know there's a history of slurs used describing them as untrustworthy or duplicitous, is that what is being claimed this relates to? Seems like her comments were pretty clearly made about the Israeli governments war efforts rather than about Jews in general, but good of her to apologize for any confusion and clarify her comments regarding financial influence on US policy, which I haven't seen anyone try to actually counter.

I don't think pointing out the influence of AIPAC is anti-Semitic.

I also don't think the intent of the Benjamins tweet was anti-Semitic.

However, to boil down the exchange, the original tweet was basically:

"Why do American politicians spend so much time defending Israel?"

and her response was simply:

"Money"

Given the historical trope of Jews controlling world governments through their control/hoarding of wealth, I can see how this statement would be harmful to the Jewish community. I think if she had said: "because AIPAC has undue influence in American politics," it would have been less pithy, but also received differently. I don't think she intended to play upon this trope in this exact tweet, but as I stated before Impact > intent. While I don't know motives - this is similar to the President of Lipscomb decorating the table with cotton bolls when having Black students over to talk. It may be because it is trendy in Southern Living Magazine, etc. to decorate this way without malicious intent, but the impact on the students was harmful, making it racist.

eta: Similar in showing difference in intent v. impact, not in scale/order/obliviousness, etc. But also to show that being oblivious (intentionally or otherwise) to harmful history or stereotypes does not absolve one from having racist ideas or actions.

Sure. But of course the answer to “Why do American politicians...?” is “Money.”

Heck, the answer to “Why do Americans...?” is “Money.”

It’s not like she said “Shekels.”

The hypnotize part isn't the anti-Semitic section. This is " may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel."

I am openly and clearly against Netanyahu. I've said he's one the main reasons there hasn't been a peace in the Middle East. Opposing policy is not anti-Semitic.

Sure, which is also why I don't think it was intentional at all. But I can also see how it might be received by the Jewish community.

That's not anti-semitic.

Pretty lady should keep her mouth shut is a pretty fucking sexist comment. That guy should apologize.
