Wellman Retiring; Currie New AD

question(s)

so when this great coach is hired i'll be donating to deacon club again. i assume any past "credits" are long gone. and i assume whatever donation you are making is due in full at the time of signing up? looks like it has to be in by 5/31. sure as hell hope there is a new coach by then.

All of the "inside" info I heard or that was hinted at around here pointed to a Wellman retirement in late spring/early summer. Any chance the leak to Glenn was a way to force the issue on Manning and go ahead and get Currie involved ASAP? I think ChrisL said it caught the AD office off guard. Could it be that Wellman was planning to leave Manning at the helm and just hand over the reigns later this spring?

It's not like Currie is a stranger to AD coups...he's just been on the other side of it.

No

My understanding is that it caught the administration off-guard but they were planning on announcing it Monday just force them to hurry up with the planned PR and announcements

I'll be interested to learn the buyout when it becomes public knowledge. I'm thinking Wellman botched that and it actually is high.

Thanks for the clarification.

It would not be beyond the dumpster fire that is the wake forest AD's office to botch this by announcing the change of the AD about 8 days before the end of the season and then sticking Currie with Manning for one or more years. If Manning is staying a decent man would take that bullet on the way out.

Manning is the reason Currie has this job. Of course he’s gone. That’s the main reason to announce Currie now as opposed to in May.

This. 1,000 times this. Manning is finally dead man walking.

1. on Curry's list is student-athletic experience. I think you can make an argument that of the 20+ student athletes that have been brought in by Manning at least 10 of those have had a miserable to poor experience. John Collins is the lone exception. Perhaps Chill.

5. on Curry's list is fan experience. Fan experience has been miserable.

4. championships. We haven't won a tournament in Danny's 5 years.

3. This is where Manning excels. We have no NCAA violations and we have kept all of our scholly athletes alive and safe. Only Coach Jones drunken encounter resulted in a death. So compliance wise Manning is gold

2. value to the university. See fan experience

I could get a little hyped for head coach Childress in Cameron.

THIS!

I still remember that game when Randolph threw his gum into the Cameron Crazies section after he made that shot over Grant Hill to win the game!

A good hint would be when the picture of the three of them was taken. Are they all in "weekend business casual" sweaters because they had to rush out on Sunday to snap the pics?

Beyond the search for a new basketball coach, it will be interesting to see how Currie what other changes he will make. Will our non-conference scheduling for football and basketball change? I hope the UNC series stays.

I was one of the few Wake fans at Cameron that night. The only time I've seen a game there......and it was a great one.

It's just fluff. They can't really say "Yeah, Wellman is AD until May 1st but he's not in charge." I'd imagine Wellman is largely a figurehead leader at this point. Long term decisions (such as what to do with WF Basketball next year and beyond) will almost certainly be decided by numerous people, especially Currie. Wellman will likely have plenty of input and advice as well but I still don't read too much into those quotes.

Yeah, that article does not inspire confidence.
