The current GOP is not a party of conservatism so by lumping all conservatives into the GOP and lambasting that group whole hog, there isn’t much motivation for actual conservatives to engage in meaningful dialogue.

I don't understand why someone would not feel comfortable discussing conservative ideology here. If someone shows up and is a clear partisan supporter of the pubs, then yeah, you run the risk of getting lumped in with the pubs.

If there were as many conservatives with hardcore convictions as self-titled conservatives proclaim then Donald and the far right wouldn’t have taken over the party.

And knight, you said this policy shit before and when confronted with positions Donald has taken on the topics you said you care about they hardly matched at all.

I certainly agree that the GOP doesn’t have many conservative positions in practice (plenty in theory) beyond social conservatism and “we want lower taxes” though.

I mean wanting to force social media to allow equality in viewpoints is one of the least conservative positions imaginable yet Donald spoke it and his lemmings all eagerly jumped aboard.

Not anymore. And probably not for a long time before that.

Which party represents your ideology, then, if not for the Republican Party? Are you a straight ticket Democratic voter?

I’ll turn the microscope on me, though. I’m somewhere between a democratic socialist and a social democratic when it comes to ideology. Until we break out of the two party system, however, the Democratic Party represents my ideological orientation. Barack Obama was my President, Hillary Clinton was my nominee, whether I agree with their positions 100% or not. Stating anything otherwise is disingenuous at best in a two party representative democracy.

If you voted for Republicans in any of the last few elections, then this is partly your responsibility, even if this current GOP doesn’t 100% represent your particular ideological orientation. If that sucks to hear, then there are a lot of things that you can do to lighten your conscience in the fall of 2020.

How do y’all envision breaking out of the two party system while maintaining the current voting system? Our plurality rule system promoted the two party system.

I’m all for proportional representation or ranked choice - but does anyone believe we will ever have a sustained multi party system if there isn’t a change to the voting method?

I don't envision us ever expanding to more than 2 parties. What worries me some is the possibility of contracting the number of parties. To one. We're inching closer to a V for Vendetta world and doing so without some extreme type of event causing it. Our republic has had a nice run, but no form of government lasts forever. So who knows if it'll last to when global warming finally makes the planet uninhabitable.

There is no party that currently represents my views.

Since I’ve been eligible to vote my Presidential election votes have been: Bush, McCain, Romney, and Clinton.

The first person I ever voted for was Mark Warner as the governor of Virginia. I voted for Stacy Abrams in the last election but that was more a product of Brian Kemp than anything that drew me to her.

I’ll vote for whoever the Dem nominee is unless Trump is somehow not the GOP nominee.

I’ve been rereading democracy in America for the first time since college and it’s amazing the number of aspects he touches on that are weaknesses that we are now experiencing a division on.

Yep. Either Republicans succeed in their plan to rule as a racially homogenous party or the backlash renders the GOP powerless.

The best shot at a multiparty system is actually due the current state of the GOP. If the Republicans resist Trumpism, there’s no place for the Trumpists to go except for their own party.

Of course I’ve argued that we do have a multiparty system that tends to coalesce into two sides. The allegiances tend to shift over time.

The Democratic party doesn't represent my views because I'm not a liberal, but it's about as close as it gets, so they have gotten my vote.

I'm fucking sick of conservatives claiming that this GOP isn't there party. It absolutely is. Y'all made this happen. Thanks for Trump! Thanks for McConnell! Thanks for the decades of judicial fascism to come!

And here comes the lumping of all conservatives back into the GOP.

#notallrepublicans is such a cowardly position, man.

The GOP was doing horrible things back when you were still voting for them, too. You voted for Romney during the peak of congressional obstructionism and probably voted for state and local politicians who did the same. Trump is all of the -ists, but when it comes to policy he’s otherwise a pretty normal conservative.

Romney openly courted Trump’s endorsement during the birther movement. I don’t understand how a conservative can disavow the GOP now when 99% of the same Republicans they supported four years are still in the GOP.
