Louisville Game Time - 7:30 ACCN

also, should we onside kick every time when we are underdogs. sciba is monte

the officiating probably didnt go our way but in any case our defense got smoked, esp by misdirection. is there something systemic? just smenda and redd being below average? also feel we got very little pressure on qb. related?

Defensive line can't get pressure on the QB, the linebackers really suck at pass coverage, and our secondary is just average to below average but also get put on islands by scheme as well as how shitty our linebackers are at pass coverage. I mean truly the second level is just trash at dropping back to defend, especially when the front four can't get to the QB.

The sum of the parts is worse than the individual parts IMO.

Our pass rush seemed tentative because we didn’t want to overrun the QB and give him running lanes- particularly the starter. So we went in between and neither pressured him nor effectively spied him.

UL could not guard our WR’s. So they grabbed and held on every single play. If it’s not going to be called, then defensively we need to grab and hold on every play. Make them call it consistently.

Agreed . The film review of the defense is going to look worse than it did live. Clawson claims his relationships with players and coaches allows him to get tough when things don’t go well. We will see this weekend. You know Clawson has already ripped some assholes this morning. Hopefully our senior leadership will help . We will play hard next week but our lack of speed and athleticism on defense was severely exposed.

Blame Wellman and move on. It's officially "Free Shoes" week.

We all agree that our only chance is because their quarterbacks not as good as Louisville quarterbacks

So let's get a couple things straight. I am a Wake Forest alum who hates UNC as much as any of you, especially in football where they have NOTHING to hang any reputation on. When Mack Brown was there before there was no FSU, VT or Miami. Clemson was middling. He had to beat Md or State most years and that was it. And as far as last night most of you nit-picking this game have missed the big picture. Our defense did the best they could with the athletes we have. It's not scheme, or coaching, or the bye week. Our D-line hasn't pressured anybody all season, and with a 4 man rush against the rest of our schedule probably won't. Basham is an excellent player, but he ain't Reggie White. Bothroyd and Kamara are playing their asses off and wouldn't start for most ACC defenses. Strnad and Smenda are the best we have. Our DB's probably had zero pass breakups last night and always play off coverage because they're not fast enough for man coverage against most receivers. Nobody on our team was fast enough to cover Atwell anywhere on the field. Our offense, for a Wake Forest team, is pretty dangerous. BUT, it's built around the tempo and the funky mesh point to mask the fact that we have a very weak o-line that doesn't open holes, ever. Surratt is a serious baller, best we've had since Ricky Proehl. Hinton is a good receiver( not as good as Dortch), Washington has hands of stone at least 50% of the time. Carney is a super tough dude. Newton is a super raw talent. Sophisticated talent, none of them except maybe Surratt. Newman's touch on short throws is non-existent while his deep throws are better. Neither CBS or Walker is a legit home run threat at this level. We are getting the most out of this team. That's a credit to Clawson regardless of individual moments in a game. Unless we play well as a team, and get some calls from the refs, neither of which happened last night, we're gonna lose some of these games to mediocre ACC teams, because that's who we are too in our "good years". I'll stick to my mantra that 8 wins outta this team is a very good accomplishment.

TLDR

Read last sentence. You think 8 regular season wins or 7 plus bowl win?

Pretty decent summary to be honest. I'd be happy with 8 regular season wins even with the 5-0 start. Only thing I'd disagree with is I do believe Walker has home run ability at this level

Living in the past. Embrace the progress and evolution of Wake fball even after a bad game.

We just need adequate defense to win games.

Last night we had two major anomalies.

1. Kick coverage, the two kick offs and the punt return. I'd say 9 of 10 times the guy that hesitates to bring it out of the end zone winds up down before the 20.
2. Three turnovers and I think 2-3 fumbles we recovered. Needless to say Newman's redzone int was a killer.

I'm ok if we have to outscore teams to win (which of course you have to do anyway), I think other than Clemson the offense is good enough to win any game.

While I'm disappointed by the loss and the mistakes we made, I'm impressed by the heart this team has. We could have packed it in and lost by 30, instead we almost pull out the miracle win.

This is much better than beating BC 3-0 or VT 6-3.

UL scored TDs on drives of 28, 13, and 15 yds. All 18 possessions for UL averaged <29 yds/possession. D had some BAD plays but I feel did not play bad. Speed exposed some of our deficiencies but back the bus off of those guys.

Coach did not have team prepared and ready to go mentally or assignment-wise and he accepts this. The game plan on defense was woefully lacking. No one spied their QB ever. DBs looked pedestrian in all phases of the game.
The prep and execution on ST was atrocious except for Sciba.
On offense, Newman was a telegraph operator the whole game. Too many receivers forgot to catch the thrown balls which gave their DBs second chances.
Carney and Newman TOs were totally unforced and back breakers.
Too many players, parents and wannabes read their Twitter pages for the past two weeks.

When the Deacs got punched in the mouth and knocked down the players DID react pretty well but the coaches failed to make necessary adjustments to deliver a knockout punch back. How many times did their “running” QBs rip this defense up by running for first downs and more on 3rd and forever?

We still win this game if Carney doesn't fumble, or if Jamie does not throw the interception. The refs just turned a blind eye to PI which I thought was something we could depend on. Throwing it up to Scotty or Sage and getting the ball or the call. That did not happen.

I just don’t buy the notion that our starters aren’t talented enough to play much better against the competition than they have this year. We lost to Louisville and will lose again if Clawson & Co. fails to prepare the team scheme-wise and mentally which just clearly happened against Louisville. We should blow some of the competition off the field but Coach must let the dogs out early and often. Conservatism isn’t going to get the job done.

This is terrible. I'll break it down for you (while using a readable format):

- "Our defense did the best we could with the athletes we have." We have two defensive players that have had first round NFL draft projections (Bassey and Basham).

- "Washington has hands of stone at least 50% of the time." Scotty Washington was just added to the Biletnikoff award watch list because of the excellent season he is having.

- "We have a weak offensive line that doesn't open holes, ever." We are second in the ACC in offense (behind Clemson) and 4th in rushing. We have already had 4 players with 100 yard rushing games (Walker, Newman, Carney, Beal-Smith) for the first time since 1971.

- "Walker is not a home run threat." He has the longest run in the history of Wake Forest football.

These are all facts.

I mean, I’ve been as angry as I’ve been in a long time about the missed opportunities and missed call on the onside kick. And I’m as concerned as anyone about the D and special teams. But let’s be real: UGA lost to USC. At home, too. Don’t you think their fans are scratching their heads at a home loss against an inferior opponent with so much on the line? It’s football. It’s *college* football. It happens. We’re 8-1 our last 9 games. That’s incredible. Plus Louisville is better than people think.

The little picture is turnovers and special teams. The big picture is Clawson getting the players to deal with success. It's something this program hasn't had to deal with until the season was over.. The Cards ran up a lead before we knew it. We should have known better and stopped the hole were in from being so deep. Learn, and take it out on the 'noles.
