Basham, Surratt, Hartman and Kern return

Skinner had a Remington brand camo jock strap if I’m not mistaken...

Let’s paraphrase. For a significant stretch of games he may have been the best QB Wake has ever had but he ruined the afternoon of the second day after Christmas for me by playing poorly in a bowl game that I failed to buy a ticket to attend in person and paid nothing to watch from my couch. GET HIM THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!
Skinner is the best but at that point we had won 10 of 11 games with Newman at QB and he had done some amazing things at NCSU and in Birmingham. Look, I never wanted Newman to leave. He’s the one who is jumping ship. Just not going wish him luck as he goes through the door.

And fuck you dude. I didn’t go to NY (because I don’t like the place) but was at the past three bowls. Did you go to NY?

Norm Snead.
Yes, I guess that means I'm an "old dude".

Just a thought. Maybe Newman thinks he might benefit from playing in an offense where he takes a snap under center then drops back to hand off or pass. They still do that in the NFL don't they?

Anyone faulting someone who wants to play football for a living wanting to get out of our gimmicky offense that puts significant injury risks on its quarterbacks is out of their mind

I don't fault him overall as he and the supporting cast gave us a mostly fun season. I think (do not know of course) that this decision was made by bowl time and if that is true, I wish he had just disclosed it. He played poorly in the bowl and Hartman might have done better. Michigan State was really bad this year; we shouldn't have lost that game. Clawson stuck with Newman a long time too...which was of course, in hindsight, pointless on multiple levels. A lot of people saw that bowl loss due to the good time slot. Not catastrophic, but we looked very LOWF in that game which is a shame.

It is amazing how many noobs claim that Jamie is one of the best one or two QB's has ever had. Jamie has great pro upside and had a very good year and a half but Norm Sneed, Jay Venuto, Mike Elkins and Riley Skinner all say hi. We could also argue over Mike McGlamery, Brian Kuklick and John Wolford. Jamie was awesome from NC State last year through BC this year, but a bit of perspective is needed.

I loved Newman as our qb, but this redshirting rule fascinates me. Hatrman's had what? 9 1/2 games across two years w 3 to go. Assuming health, he can have more starts at qb than any qb except skinner

I wish Newman the best. I am curious to see how it works out. My inclination in watching him over the past 2 seasons was that our offense was built to accentuate his strengths (great arm strength and touch on deep balls) and mitigate his weakneses (accuracy almost everywhere else he might throw). But maybe the offense was actually holding him back.

Come on man. For starters, “CP2” was everywhere when he left.

Oh yeah everyone on the boards was super chill and happy for CP3 when he announced he was entering the draft after the Pittsnogle debacle. Good point y’all.

Strickland won’t let the facts get in the way of a good argument.

lol wtf

owgs still resent cp

Lots of things were said and felt when CP left and I am not going to rehash that now - it is ancient history. But I don't think any of it equated to "disliking CP". I am willing to bet that there aren't any Wake fans who don't like him and pull against him, for instance, because he left a year earlier than expected.

Completely agree. Also apparent having potentially the best WRs I can remember WF having all at once made Jamie look really good. I guess we will never know how much his injury caused the poor 2nd half vs. loss of Surratt and Washington were the bigger contributors as he had a lot of deep balls that they just went up and grabbed out of the air. Somewhat telling to me that he struggled vs. Syracuse while Hartman came in and Donovan went for 170 yards as Jamie couldn't seem to connect with other WRs outside of Hinton once Surratt and Washington went down. Jamie 6 of 13 for 71 yards and 21 yards rushing while Hartman was 25-42 for 350 yards and 44 yards rushing, so no doubt Hartman was playing better in that game.

Also agree he should have made known he was exploring a transfer before bowl game for sake of integrity and letting Clawson and team decide how to move forward from there. Also not sure if just a college kid being a kid or an underhanded swipe @ WF but his choice of words after bowl game was not the best. To say he was going to make a "very smart" decision could be seen as taking a swipe at WF for moving onto a better school vs. saying "making the best decision for myself" or any other way to say it so not appearing to make it appear as if leaving WF was the smart move.

I do find it interesting that OU is losing 4 starting OL and 2 back-ups, so he might be running more than he realizes when he gets to OU and a tougher situation that coming back to WF. Also losing their top WR who is a big body like Surratt/Washington.

Even more importantly the Duck's back-up qb was the #1 rated player out of Arizona and no 6 pro-style qb coming out of HS. He was 12-15 for 144 yds this past season so I would say there is no certainty Mr Newman is starting when he steps onto the campus in Eugene. Should be interesting to see how it plays out but I for one am excited for Hartman and seeing what he can do now that he has some great experience and will get a chance to come in and lead the team. Also think Kearns could make some noise in the spring and more than a capable backup if needed.

If Jamie stayed, good chance Hartman leaves. I’ll take 3 years of Hartman over 1 year of Newman.

Eh, I disagree. Hartman used his redshirt year this year. If Newman stayed then Hartman sits a year (while seeing action in 4 games) then has 2 years of eligibility at Wake to be the starter. If he transferred, he'd have to sit out the whole year and then would have to compete for a starting job with 2 years of eligibility left.

Since in either scenario he'd only get 2 years as a starter, why wouldn't he stay at Wake where he would get to play some next year and is familiar with the system and team? Assuming he's happy at Wake, transferring wouldn't make sense IMO.

Sam wouldn't be limited to 4 games

I am hoping Newman ends up at Oregon. His performance has been on of huge peaks and valleys- be chance to evaluate him on a "bigger" stage. As fans, we will have to learn to adjust to transfer portals and 4 game red shirts as the college game morphs in to new realities of college football as the business revenue generator it is.

It is possible to hold these thoughts at the same time:

Being disappointed in his decision
Being thankful for his contributions to the program and the quality of the teams he led
Remembering that he’s actually a good kid and represented the program well and wish him success in the future

Guaranteed his teammates are handling this with a lot more maturity than some of the turd posts here

This. Even watching the bowl game it's nearly impossible not to hold conflicting opinions of him. At one point in the first half Newman broke a run and had a clear path to the sideline to avoid contact. Instead he throws in a few high steps and decides he'd rather lower his shoulder into someone. Both he and Cade were effective on the ground which led to a couple wide open throws to Hinton and Freudenthal. Seemed like he was rolling. You had the freak pick 6 and the chop block keeping us from a double digit halftime lead. But the 2nd half brings one completion over 10 yards and zero points. He takes some bad sacks, makes some really questionable throws on critical downs, seems to lack any sense of urgency. Then it's over.

I'm not sure how any reaction other than a mixed bag of appreciation and disappointment makes sense. I don't buy that he's scared of getting hurt in our offense because he didn't play like he had any interest in protecting himself. I don't buy that our offense can't showcase an NFL talent - Wolford threw for over 3,000 yards without as good a receiving group as we'll have, if he'd been 6'4" 230lbs he'd have been drafted. If Surratt doesn't get hurt who knows what the year would have been like - but he did, and Newman never found a way to fill the void. Is that on him? Our receivers? Our coaches?

Staying at Wake certainly had some risk, but if he's really headed to Oregon to follow Herbert and their 12 win season to try to take the reigns for a year, that seems far riskier (albeit with a much higher ceiling). Maybe the first half of the season and the first half of the bowl game version of Newman can make it happen. The 2nd half version of Newman ends up as a backup for Shough and likely ends any chance he has to get drafted. Just seems like a big, and largely unnecessary, gamble. But if you really look at Wake's year and you drop in Hartman for Newman, do people really think we'd be that much worse, if at all? Feels very much like a break-even situation to me.

Anyway, hope he wins a starting job and plays well which leads to him getting drafted. I also hope Hartman puts up better numbers than him across the board as Wake makes it to the Orange Bowl... I'm sure folks will leave or whatever, but on paper having multiple years of Hartman/Walker/Greene/Surratt/Groulx has to be near the top of any offensive collection of talent in Wake history. I lean more towards respecting the gamble Newman is taking than being bitter over his exit.

About 30-40% of the time, yes.

I find if funny that people think the NFL is run under center. League average was 63% this year. The third down rate was 88%. Baltimore, was actually 5% on all downs.
