Middle East: Saudis Murder & Dismember Washington Post Contributor

Per this article:

So what's the argument against killing him, if Trump does it, it must be bad?

America, at least recently until yesterday, has refrained from assassinating State actors. It’s good policy if you want to avoid going to war with an actual nation.

But now we’re in uncharted waters. Congress has failed in its oversight by continuing to authorize the AUMF and allowing Trump to declare parts of the Iranian military as a terrorist group, which allowed him to carry out this strike without going to Congress first.

But War is big business, so you’re not going to see strong pushback from most politicians, even those who fancy themselves as liberals, because most of them have constituents that benefit from defense contracts. So you’ll see the the tepid statement like those from Biden, Warren and Chris Murphy that justify the killing but express “disappointment” in how it was carried out.

I’m not a huge fan of Bernie, but at least he’s strong and unequivocal in his anti war stance.

The world’s #1 bad guy is someone maybe a few people here heard of before yesterday.

You really believe that?

I don't know, but who is the world's number 1 bad guy then? Kim? Also, super glad that I'm too old to be drafted at this point.

Since we are in the business of killing state actors who support terrorism now, how about we pay attention to the Kingdom of Saud now.

For the record, I'm glad this guy is dead. I hate the hypocrisy around it, the timing, the false equivalencies I've seen to this being similar to bin Laden, and the dickhead who supposedly ordered it.

Agree with all this.

Also, it's pretty clear that this was a strike of opportunity and that little thought has gone into what happens the day after. It looks like the Iraqi parliament might vote to kick our forces out of Iraq. Does that serve our long-term best interests in the region? Does it help our efforts to contain Iran? Probably not. It's all just an incoherent mess and a lot of people are going to die because of it.

To be fair, it's not like past US administrations have been successful in "fixing" the middle east. However, the calculus of this administration has clearly changed over to confrontation, escalation, and destruction as a strategy, as opposed to any attempt at diplomacy, calming tensions, or trying to reach negotiated outcomes.

No doubt he was a bad guy that the world is better without.

But an impeached President is unilaterally drone striking foreign government leaders in other sovereign countries without consulting Congress.

Read somewhere this would be the equivalent of assassinating the VP, Director of the CIA, and head of JSOC.

Also the classification as a terrorist is just a convenient label allowing the freedom to strike. Role reversal and in the Middle East it’s pretty clear that US actions are seen as terror, I guess free reign on any political actors involved in US policy.

Agree with all this.

I'm with you. And the Ukraine mess, the abandonment of the Kurds in Syria and this strike are exactly what I feared when the generals and other adults left the administration last year. However you thought of guys like McMaster, Kelly, Mattis and Tillerson, they were all adults in a room otherwise populated by children and zealots, and I had some faith that they would keep Trump from engaging in stupid and anti-American foreign policy. The thought of another 4 years of Trump with only folks like Pompeo and Barr with him is more than chilling.

Not to fear. Moscow mitch and leningrad lindsey are here to save the day.

And then Trump will brag that he fulfilled his promises to bring the troops home.

What would America do if China killed Pompeo in England? Except the guy we killed is far more powerful in Iran than Pompeo is in the US.

This guy was a brutal, murdering thug, but he still was the second most powerful person in Iran. Fighting Iran isn't going to be anything like fighting our immoral war with Iraq. Iran has a real army and is multiple times larger than Iraq in population as well.

5 years ago I might not believe col anus was real. After seeing how many people I have known that were completely normal and reasonable just a few years ago become so detached from reality it's clear he's all too real.

the col is the actual low hanging fruit for these racist, dog whistle blowing, 'merica and jeebus loving people that have taken over an entire party to the detriment (makes things worse anus) of our country.
Is it ironic that MAGA now finally means something? It's not what col anus thinks it is.
