Danny Manning replacement search thread

Agree that the decision has already been made, that Currie took the steps to get the buyout money in place, and that Currie has communicated with coaches' agents to know the probability that WF can land its targets. It will take more than a win tonight to unwind it.

It's nice to have some optimism about the future of the WF men's basketball team here, but I will be shocked if all of the returning talent stays and our committed recruits remain committed when the change is made.

Maybe WF hires Beilein, everyone with eligibility returns, the class stays in tact, and WF makes the NCAAs next year. Would be nice, but possibly not realistic. Think its more likely that at least some of the current talent and some of the incoming recruits scatter to the point that WF is in rebuild mode next year -- which is fine as long as the next coach in position to rebuild WF basketball.

I keep thinking back to that gut punch of a Wellman/Manning media event to announce he was coming back for another year (~52 weeks). So I'm trying not to get too excited about getting through 49 of those weeks when we might have to tack on another 52 excrutiating weeks in the near future.

Agree 100%.

Beilein becoming available strengthens my likely unfounded assumption that Currie will make the right decision despite the outcomes of UNC, NCSU, and the ACCT.

I agree that this is the most likely scenario, especially losing the recruits.

I mean, look at Pitt after Capel replaced Stallings. Mass exodus in a situation where you'd have thought the players would be excited about the change. Some of them ultimately came back, but for a while I wondered how they'd even put a team on the floor ahead of last season.

I would also like to think Currie helped negotiate some new buyout terms that would decrease the buyout $$$ if Manning doesn't hit a certain # of wins this season. That's likely being too optimistic, though.

You know what, I think we will be ok even if we lose a couple of players off a 13-15, 6 ACC win team. Getting the right coach in place to clear out Manning’s disastrous tenure is the only thing that matters in the next couple of weeks. Whoever wants to leave, bye. Get the fire and then the hire right.

If we get a name coach, the only guy I'd marginally worry about leaving is Sarr and it wouldn't be that high a percentage due to the lower pay in the French league. If he finishes with two more big games, I think Sarr returns setting being a first round pick in the NBA and making millions more than in France as his goal.

Other players would have to sit out. Plus, it seems like these guys get along.

If Beilein, Shaka and Matta are our top targets, then I don't see us losing any of the Top 7/8 returnees.

What leverage would Currie have to renegotiate?

I get what you're saying, but that's viewing it from an outside perspective. 100% of the guys on our team chose to play for Danny Manning and have not transferred since making that decision, suggesting that they like playing for Danny Manning. Regardless of whether we hire a coach that will be better for the program, that doesn't mean that the guys currently on the team will want to play for that coach. Sitting out for one year is not as big a deterrent as you'd think, especially for guys with no realistic chance at being a first round NBA pick where age and potential matters so much.

Noted and filed away to potentially bring up at a later date.

I see that qualifier at the end, too... What if it's Forbes? Or someone other than those 3?

I remember being absolutely shocked last year that we didn't lose anyone to transfer. Given the attrition over the prior few seasons, it was definitely surprising that everyone stuck around.

There's no doubt that this team likes Manning, and probably each other.

With the extremely limited information we have on his contract, definitely none.

That comment was made more as hoping there are more provisions in the contract than we are aware.

Sarr definitely has a chance at being a first round pick if he continues playing like this. Chaundee will be a senior and isn't going anywhere (unless he can graduate). Massoud was considering Harvard along with Wake. He's looking for an education and will likely be a focus of our next coach (especially if it's Beilein).

If we get a name coach, I see only a potential exodus of bench players. Although some of the luster has come off of Shaka, if Beilein goes to Texas, Shaka will be looking for a place to land and our chances go up.

I find it ironic that some of the people giving me the most shit a month or more ago for saying don't worry about the "buyout" and that Danny is gone are now saying both of those things now.

My bad, I couldn't possibly know anything.

Hmm..I note you didn't "file away" the way you addressed my saying the "buyout" wasn't an issue for getting rid of Danny this year (or really last) and that Danny was gone.

You want to play gotcha but not give any credit.

How very telling.

Wasn't calling you out. I liked that you took a position on future transfers. Feel free to post some of my predictions from the past... There are a ton of them that didn't work out. In this case, I think we'll have at least 3 transfers/early departures with a coaching change... Regardless of whom is hired.

IIRC, your take on the buyout was that it wasn't as bad as reported... We have no evidence either way. I think most posters just think that things are so bad that the buyout doesn't matter as much as it did last year (because, in part, it is one year less onerous).
