FUCK YOU, RON WELLMAN

Yes the wrong hire was made. Ron Wellman should never have been hired.

Imagine where Wake would be if that hire had not been made.

Wake might be playing in the SoCon if it weren't for Ron Wellman. He fucked up basketball over the past ten years with a startling level of hubris, and as an old man he didn't relate as well to people as he did in his prime, but he did a ton for Wake athletics.

Bullshit

Might. Pretty sure Wake would not have been reduced SoCon level of play if Ron Wellman were never hired.

Terrible hire. Miles ahead of the last two by Wellman.

Miles ahead? By what definition? Certainly not in terms of won/lost records. Had internet message boards been around in the 80’s, Staak would have been excoriated as was [name redacted] and DFL.

Wellman did a lot of great things for Wake. The last ten years of Wake b-ball is not among them. I am a season ticket holder for football and thank him every day for hiring Dave Clawson. Wake soccer has turned this old man into a soccer fan. I credit Wellman with that.

At this point, just let our new AD make the necessary changes for Wake basketball. There is no way Wellman “pushed” Currie to keep DFL. I look for Currie to make a great hire within the next few weeks.

I don't think Wellman hired Jay Vidovich?

Some of you guys deserve Wellman. No wonder the program is in shambles.

Unfortunately, the Bob Staak years were my undergrad years as well. Most of this crowd would have moved well past billboards and onto television ads by year three.

I am as angry as anyone at what Wellman did to our basketball program.

I am thankful that he hired people like Jim Grobe, Skip Prosser, and Dave Clawson.

Sure. But that's a short list for 27 years.

I'm not going to get into the weeds on his "accomplishments". That's your opinion. What I DO KNOW is that I met the man on a few occasions at athletic fundraisers and once at a private cocktail party hosted by a mutual friend. He came across as one of the most pompous, arrogant jerks I've ever met in my life.

I could have been a donor with $100 million in my back pocket. But, he never took the time to find out because I was not in his clique. That's why I think many have such disdain for him. Oh, and also wrecking half of our revenue sports programs.

Agreed. Other than the last two basketball hires, for what else would you be critical of Wellman?

Football: Sticking with Caldwell long after it was clear he wasn't cut out to be an ACC coach at that time in his career. Signing Grobe to a "lifetime" contract and not demanding the staff changes necessary to keep moving the football program forward.

Men's Basketball: Giving Dino a three year contract after Skip passed. That was a good time to just turn the page on the Prosser era and hire an experienced head coach. It's rare that a team gets to hire a new coach with good recruits waiting in the wings. The standard way to handle that difficult situation and rough timing would be to assign an interim head coach and hire a new coach. Then Wellman compounded that by giving Dino an extension before firing him 6 months later. Then obviously the next two coaches.

Women's basketball: Everything. There's no excuse why Wake can't have a competitive women's basketball program. It's not even a decent program. It's got to be one of the worst if not the worse major conference program over the last 30 years.

I don't follow revenue sports like others have, but it's a shame that Field Hockey has fallen off. From what people here have posted much of that is specifically due to Wellman overreacting to some incident years ago. It's still a good program, but not what it was. Jen Averill is the greatest coach in Wake Forest history. She was here before Wellman and could probably be here for another 10+ years.

Didn't he also run off a baseball coach who won either 2 or 3 ACC titles and try to fire a very successful women's golf coach before there was an all-out mutiny?
