New coaching search thread

In no world should it take a competent coach in the ACC 10 years to turn a program around with the facilities we have and basketball tradition we’ve had before the last decade.

Hell, a good coach should have us back in the NCAAT in 3 years. A really good coach would parlay that into perennial success from there.

The stadium is a miniscule part of the success of the program.

When we were good, the poop sheet did an analysis of biggest home court advantages over a decade plus and we were at the top of the heap.

Our problem has always been underperformance in tournament basketball which limited our ability to build upon success.

We have the worst stadium in college basketball. That's the most important "facility" a basketball team has. Ours is way 2nd rate. We need our own gym built for men's ACC basektball. Haven't built one since 1938.

I absolutely agree with this statement. I just don’t think we need to slice it in half. 9k-10k seems like a perfect fit for us.

It's not close to being as bad as LBSU or ICI.

Completely disagree, the Joel has been a big hindrance. Even when we were very good, the Wolfpack, Carolina, and Duke fans were there in droves. Ross has long been right on this, Wake deserves much better than the Joel

1. Forbes. We would be good again, quickly. Kind of like when Skip arrived. Top third of ACC quickly.

2. Kelsey. Not as good a coach as Forbes, but would be solid, middle of the pack team most years. Competitive.

3. Miller. Not sure. His teams, the past few years, were well coached, played some good ball. Interesting option.

Not with anything sustained. Penny Hardaway's Memphis team shows that. You can make a splash. And cheat. It won't last.

We need a 7K seat stadium, a hungry Coach who is committed for the long haul and buy in and patience. We get that with several of these options. I don't know Odom but if he's as smart and hungry as Wes, Pat, and Russell, I'm in for him too.

If we want to land and keep a guy like Miller, we need to have a sweet dental coverage offering. Young and with kids, he is looking at a couple thousand per year in orthodontics expenses in 3-4 years time. A good dental plan with >80% orthodontics coverage could really set us apart from UNC when they come calling in a few years.

Practice facility is way more important than a basketball arena. Players spend way more time at a practice facility. Arena is used for half a day 13-15 times a year.

A smaller stadium is not going to fix all the systemic problems that have suppressed attendance at live sporting events.

The huge amount of money it would take to build a new arena is definitely better spent elsewhere.

Ever been to Cassell?

The biggest risk in this search is Hatch. He is the single biggest problem with Wake athletics. In my opinion, he has done more damage than Wellman. Wake athletics were in good shape until Hatch arrived. After a couple of years of Hatch’s influence the decline began. Hatch is no friend to athletics just the opposite. It is a small miracle that we found Clawson and have been able to hold on to him. Bottom line: if Hatch plays an active role in the selection of this coach...we are in trouble.

I don't think this can be overstated. Unfortunately, this is an excellent post.

Oh I know you are. What point would be your benchmarks for success and your admittance of failure?

We need to reach the round of 64 by year 4.

Thereafter a baseline is 7 points a decade. 1 for an ACC title game. 2 for a title. 1 for a sweet 16. 3 for a final four.

If we hire Miller or Kelsey, we might as well shut the fucking program down.

Come on man. Joel is bigger than we need yes. Not even close to the worst in college b-ball. Wake had a great home court advantage when we were good.

I can dig it. Personally I think a momentum Home run hire could get us to the round of 64 in year 3, I would accept year 4, so long as we are seeing marked improvement the entire time. Like year 1: 13 wins, year 2: 16 wins and year 3 a bubble team or very close to bubble.
