There are two types, the rapid test and the deep test. One is a flu-like brain toucher, the other is just a little swirl in your nostril.

I just had the swirl done before my surgery. I was ready for the huge dive, but it didn't even go in an inch.

Obviously there is a reporting lag with the most recent week, but, despite the number of cases going up up up, the number of actual deaths has been going down down down week over week. Despite people going back to work, despite the "reopening", despite the alleged Memorial Day, summer, protest, and July 4 death surges, and despite people trying to get some semblance of normal given rampant unemployment and other resulting problems much bigger than this virus. But the WFH Elite don't want to see that, they just want to try to blame everyone who doesn't think like them for the world's problems. You want to blame religious people, you want to blame old people, you want to blame uneducated people, you want to blame poor people, you want to blame young people. You are a prejudiced, piece of shit, bigot, who is no better than those whose statues are being torn down or the dude flying the stars and bars, and you are too hypocritical and dumb to see it. Go fuck yourself.
 
Medical professionals have figured out how to keep more people with this disease alive. And yet! The number of people sick enough to be hospitalized has more than doubled in the last month (27K on June 15th to 57K on July 17th). It's not just about deaths! It's about this thing spreading so much that we don't have healthcare capacity left for all the other things people get sick for. Things are going to get UGLY when flu season hits this winter.

So, death is the only outcome we should be worried about? It seems to be all you are focused on. It is actually more complicated than that.

I also don't think telling healthcare workers that they will have a heart attack from getting the sniffles really lands well.

My kids aren't going back to school because assholes won't wear masks and take reasonable precautions to limit spread. We know how to limit spread. I want everyone to take those precautions. I want us to be as open as we can while taking those precautions. That doesn't make me a bigot. Perhaps, the projection helps you, though.
Significantly more people getting sick all at once is not going to help our economy. I admit that the one group I want to be treated differently is our kids. I would like us all to have a community goal to support our kids education. There is no education stimulus bill we can pass to supplement what they are missing out on. Agreed that teachers are much more qualified than I am to teach my kids. Just like us medical professionals are much more qualified than you to advise on a pandemic.
 
Also American deaths on a rolling seven day average have increased the last two to three weeks. We’re back to the same point we were in early June.

Oh boy, we have another case of 2&2 not understanding tables and statistics. Those are provisional death counts, which lag by weeks. That's why this is stated at the bottom of the table, "Data during this period are incomplete because of the lag in time between when the death occurred and when the death certificate is completed, submitted to NCHS and processed for reporting purposes. This delay can range from 1 week to 8 weeks or more, depending on the jurisdiction and cause of death." Therefore, these data are helpful if you look back 8 weeks ago, but not if you look over the past few weeks.

Up to date death counts started rising again about 2 weeks ago. Two weeks ago the 7 day average daily COVID death count was 529, last week was 614, and this week was 726. We know this number will continue to rise based on the increase in cases and hospitalizations.
 
I wouldn’t think that someone could make it through wake forest and after 6 months of studying something like a pandemic still struggle to grasp that deaths happen after infections

I’m curious how much the fact that it’s non white people dying the most has affected the reaction. Is the death rate different because of racial factors or is it different cause white people can socially distance better. So it’s just blacks and browns dying first, but the white folks gonna die in a couple months.

Reporting on racial disparities tends to assume that readers will see that as a problem that needs to be fixed instead of not a problem at all. It also assumes readers understand what words like “disproportionately” mean.

I think what we do know about racial disparities is an incomplete story that is being misreported. We know the most prominent hot spots are prisons and meat producing facilities. Both effect large groups of people. Both include disproportionately Black and Latino men. Add nursing homes that hit older people. Essential workers run the gamut but many are low income jobs. Black and Latino and low income people often lack access to quality health care.

I think if we had good data and could control for prison, employment, income, and a few other factors, racial disparities would disappear.

Definitely a less invasive option. But from what I've read they are not widely available to the average joe and won't be for months.

I’ve seen in mentioned for universities. They can have groups of students spit and then do more focused tests as necessary. It’s a good way to reduce costs.
