Chat Thread: Be better than the Gap, guys

"Dumb and Dumber isn't rewatchable" should go on the unpopular opinions thread. It's one of the best movies of the 1990's - imminently rewatchable.

look at this guy throwing haymakers calling DnD one of the best movies of the 90s. holy shit. someone's gotta riposte that

In other news we got a dryer repair guy over right now and seems pretty cool, about my age, put he is one chatty MFer. I gave my students a noon deadline to turn in any missing 1st quarter work, so I don't really much to do right now, so I'm rage posting in order to look busy as I stand in the kitchen.

I can repair your dryer. Your belt is broken. Your belt is always broken.

Or your heating element is burnt out.

Nope! It is the rear bearing - it is locked up or something like that and has to be replaced. He also apparently "needs to clean the shaft". My guy Scott has got it under control.

Bad time for Knight to actually be working for once.

defend this taek, film man.

It's rewatchable because it's filmed basically as a series of connecting but also standalone comedy vignettes. It's endlessly quotable, and multiple parts of the movie stand on their own as hilarious without needing to watch the entire film. It still partially defines both Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey's careers, and multiple quotes and scenes from the movie have become part of the cultural lexicon.

We're never home when our heating and air people or repairmen come to our house. We just tell them where the hidden key is and have them let the dog out and lock up afterwards. Is this incomprehensibly dumb for me to do?

Starting to feel like Step Brothers is my favorite comedy. It’s just got so much genius to it and is insanely rewatchable.

Rolling Stone already did, in their readers poll of the best movies of the 1990s - Dumb & Dumber was #25

I've got one that's gonna be wildly unpopular. I think that I laughed harder at Semipro than any other Will Ferrell movie.

watched The Mask the other night since it was on SyFy or something. Definetely the worse of his big 3 movies, but does show his range quite a bit. We watched Ace Ventura a lot when at Wake. Also used to be a big fan of In Living Color, starring one James Carrey as he was billed.

the people hating on juice for saying that knight is unfunny are deeply confusing to me

like, I didn't even realize that was a point of contention here

Do you sit at your computer, open excel, and then chuckle at the row numbers? Like, I love playing mafia with you because you're highly analytical, but you might be a poster that I'd struggle having a beer with. You come off intense as balls. Couple that with the data head thing, and dayyyuuummm.

Step Brothers was fine but I don't find myself rewatching it - just like Anchorman and the other Ferrell stuff. Old School maybe the exception.

Oh man maybe I just don't comedies anymore. Unless they are "indie" films. What have I become.

Like I love Palm Springs - does that make me cool or lame?

I've also seen Truman Show a lot bc it was filmed where my mom lives Seaside, FL. fun fact! Matt Gaetz's family owns the Truman house.

Juice, what's your favorite comedy?

tough question

I think the comedy I dig is better suited for TV, with layered jokes, callbacks, running gags, etc.

Office Space or Monty Python and the Holy Grail were two tops for me during my youth

My wife and I watched Ladybird the other night. That was funny as shit to both of us.

My favorite three movies of all time are Varsity Blues, Catch Me If You Can and That Thing You Do

Would any of those be comedies?
