First day of solo parenting while my wife is out of town, and I sorely underestimated the amount of time it would take to prep all his bottles and snacks for the day. I'm already running up against the "probably not that strict, but there's no way in hell I'm risking being turned away and stuck with a 9-month-old all day" drop-off deadline, when I pull out of the neighborhood and get stuck behind Grampa Fishing Hat going 15 mph below the speed limit. I made it with one minute to spare. It's going to be that kind of day...

haha i can feel this post in my gut

I will add that the learning curve has been amazing to watch. When we played Luigi's Mansion 3 together last summer, I did most of the stuff and she was Gooigi (helping out mostly). Took us ~15 hours. She played it again a few weeks ago with her little sister using Gooigi and no help from me and they beat it in less than 10 hours.

She still can't consistently beat me in Mario Kart, but it's coming.

And she found a lot of stuff in Odyssey that I never discovered (but she just explores a lot more than I ever did).

Man I hated the puzzles in Luigi's Mansion. I loved the art and character design and that carried me for a while.

Mako at that age I don't think you need to get a console unless you want to game with them. If it's not something you're interested in, no need to get one for them.

kids are amazing. i do enjoy 'finding' secrets in mario and my daughter's like "how did you know that was there?"

"because this is a videogame and there's always a door between two weirdly placed torches"

That moment when your kid is off bottles and you don’t have to prep anything for daycare is a big win. Especially since our daycare provides everything else (breakfast, snack, milk, etc). Now it’s just the winter clothes and the 19 unique pieces of “art” my 3 year old hands me when I get there every day.

My kids also love watching me play Ring Fit Adventure which is cool because I can get a little work out in and they are occupied by watching the monsters and (occasionally) doing the exercises with me.

Another big win is when you can leave your kid home alone. Mine is 16 now and would prefer if we just left him home alone 24/7.

also IO i'm really liking this Deacon King Kong book

I may go there next. I'm finally reading Station Eleven and am really digging it. But you can't really go wrong with any Boll short story, and you can read most in about 5 minutes or so.

Hey! A book I actually read!

Thought it was just OK, tbh.

I've posted this before, but the Wooded Kingdom music is awesome.

I mean, it's all good in that game... But that's my favorite by far.

Also, the Assist Mode in that game is so great. Allowed my 6 yo and 4 yo daughters to play the game without getting too frustrated or confused. The downside is that I tried to get them to play Galaxy and Sunshine and they aren't nearly as interested... The controls are tougher.

Our top family games are Mario Kart, Odyssey, Luigi's Mansion 3, and Zelda: BOTW. Need some others for their age range that don't suck.

It's a great one. The video I mentioned is great during that piece, the piccolo starts and then the bass player just throws down. The comments online described it as kind of surf rock, to me it always reminded me of that old song Secret Agent Man, I guess because of the rhythm and instrumentation.

I love BOTW but this year I've really been working hard to get my Spanish to a more advanced level, and I'm taking classes almost every day. That in addition to running after work leaves hardly any time after for videogames, and after dinner I'm usually more apt to read or watch something on Netflix than pick up the Switch. I definitely feel like I'm missing out, what I've played so far has been incredible.

The graduation from bottles is an amazing win. God, the washing and prepping every single night...

We do pack their lunches every day now, the enrollments not high enough to open the kitchen yet apparently but the ~5 minutes of that is peanuts compared to the old wash routine.

yeah we played Odyssey together and then went back to Galaxy, which wasn't too bad but i had to do most of the playing. But Sunshine is fucking garbage, 64 is a lot better than Sunshine

Sunshine had its moments and I liked the water cannon idea, but some of the levels were just really frustrating, including that sand bird and the pachinko machine. Galaxy is one of my favorite games though, once you got past the overworld part and dropped into Good Egg Galaxy and the music hit, you knew shit was on.

We got my son a new PS5 for Christmas and he is a Call of Duty - Cold War Mac Daddy HERO !

My wife hates video games. I've always really enjoyed them... My dad and I used to play the heck out of Pac-Man and Pole Position on the Atari 5200. Then I had a Gameboy that I played all of the time. And then PC games. And on and on.

We don't let our kids play much. My wife and I like to work out together on the weekends, so they get to play for 2 hours each day on Saturday and Sunday while the 2 year old naps and my wife and I exercise. They each get to pick a game for an hour. If it is a 1 player game, the other person just watches. Lately they've been playing a lot of Mario Kart, so they just play that together. I'll usually join them for an hour of that time after I'm done working out.

They don't play at all during the week... EXCEPT if my wife is going out to do something social (rare). Then, my 6yo and I might squeeze in an hour on a random Tuesday night.

I'd much rather they play console games than that absolute shit I see them playing on the Amazon Fire tablet we have... The stuff that is supposed to be "educational" on there is just awful. And I'd also rather they play games than just sit there and watch TV... At least there is some interaction (especially if they are playing together).

I bought the Switch for Christmas 2019... So my oldest was 5.5. Started with Zelda, which was largely too much for her... But she's always really liked Mario Kart (and the 4yo can also play). Once I got Luigi's Mansion 3 last summer, it was all over for the 6yo... She was hooked. That was a fun one to play together. Then Odyssey was fantastic, too.

I think as the weather improves (and we move to our new house next month), that 2 hours on the weekend will go away for the most part... They'll want to be outside with my wife and I while we're working out. Not to be with us... Just to ride bikes and run around and stuff.

I guess I´m lucky in that my wife loves gaming, not as much as I do, but she grew up with Nintendo and still has her original NES with games in their original cases. We've definitely been playing some Marble Madness, Paperboy, Zelda, and for some reason she also has Back to the Future which might be one of the worst games ever.

She also plays around a bit with the Xbox, she really got into Assassin's Creed years ago, played a ton of Fallout 4 in 2015, and is on Chapter 6 of RDR2. I'm trying to get her to finish because it's been fun seeing her reactions to the story. I read way too many Youtube and Reddit comments and so I got spoiled on almost everything, but with her it's more of a clean slate.

Oh man, if we join workout bro convo with book club bro convo, I'm not sure that my heart can handle the excitement.

my wife doesn't hate gaming she just doesn't give a shit about it and it took me a while to get her to understand that playing with my daughter wasn't just 'parking her in front of the screen'

yeah it was nice to be able to kick formula to the curb -- there's 56 bucks a week back in my pocket. our daycare does everything but drinks, so we send him with a couple sippy cups of milk and one of water. but it's way easier than washing all the bottles and making a big batch of formula each night.

My wife doesn't want to play games, but she loves to hear about the plots of good games like Horizon Zero Dawn.
