Official 2020-21 NBA Finals - Milwaukee Bucks win the NBA Championship!

I guess I think you gotta be a plus defender

my criteria: can you be #2 on a team that competes for a conference finals during your prime

I don't know that JC is that guy -- I'm not trying to be critical, I'm just saying I don't think a GM should pay him max money

Collins is a plus defender this season based on DRPM. He's improved based on others.

I don't think Collins needs to be more than a decent defender as a PF with Capela at C and Hunter at SF. The Hawks seem committed to pairing him with a rim protector.

that's fine, we can disagree

but a team that maxes Collins and Young and keeps Capela and Hunter is not making the conference finals, in my opinion

Most teams don't make the conference finals. The question is will they improve their chances of making the conference finals if they trade Collins or let him go elsewhere. They saved up a bunch of cap space and got Bogdan and Gallo with it. I'm not sure what they'd do with cap space from not maxing Collins that's better than keeping Collins.

Collins is the third best Wake player since Duncan but I don’t think any smart team should max him. He’s very good but that limits what you can do with roster construction.

As a young Deac, who are you saying is the second best Wake player since Duncan? Teague?

This is where I disagree (as a Hawks fan). I think with continued progression from Young, Collins, Hunter it’s possible that team could make the conference finals within 5 years. That’s probably the ceiling though.

I'm guessing he has Josh Howard as the second best Wake player since Duncan.

I think a team that spent three seasons acquiring young talent shouldn't give up on that young talent when it's time to pay them.

It's an interesting discussion. I just think teams are in a tough position trying to compete when one team has two top 5 players and another team has two top 5 players and a top 15-20 player. And then there are other teams like the Bucks and Nugs led by a freakishly good player. If you're a franchise led by young talent, you've just got to pay them and wait. We had a similar debate about paying Tatum before the season started.

I don’t remember the Tatum debate but he’s easily a max guy.

It’s all a much interesting discussion, in my opinion, if there is no player max

I meant it went Duncan, Paul, Collins

Though I’d see arguments otherwise

Howard had a better career at Wake and had a good NBA career. I think Collins will have a better NBA career.

Collins also has a pretty big drop in eFG and rebound rate this season. Strange in a contract year.

He’s playing with Capela now so his rebound rate will go down. Capela has the most rebounds and highest rebound rate of his career.

then what are you arguing should be the sample size for MVP evaluation?

the most recent regular season and most recent playoff performance? all combined playoff performance? projected playoff performance?

Tobias Harris and a group of "who's he?" get 76ers a victory.
