F is for Fascism (Ferguson MO)

Can't call it a war on drugs and militarize the police and then expect them to treat the streets like anything but a warzone.

I haven’t seen this work done, but I think that if many parameters were assessed (racial breakdown of country and police force, measures of racism, rates of drug use, drug policies, rates of police carrying weapons, and gun laws) that, by far, the greatest predictor of cops killing citizens would be gun laws. Is anyone aware of such studies?

Who needs a study when you have already come to a conclusion that supports your pre-conceived narrative that gun laws are to blame?

so 21 yo is firing shots and police are called. i'll assume this 21 yo said "here 13 yo. take the gun. you'll be fine since you are under 18." he should be charged with far more than what it appears is going to happen.

at least the col's favorite "news" source is acknowledging a problem?? sort of?? ok. not really. more likely its an attempt to say "see, we are fair an impartial!"

I would imagine our spending on law enforcement would be a better predictor.

That’s the point! I think it’s gun laws (and more specially the number of guns per person in the US), but maybe I’m wrong. That’s why I was asking if anyone knew of such an investigation.

how about your pre-conceived narrative that the second amendment only saves lives? or that police are infallible? maybe the ones supporting a war on drugs doing any good for the country? oh, maybe just tell us about the time antifa attacked the capital.

nevermind. just tell us why the sombrero wearing coed wanted you to objectify her.

Maybe, but from some brief research, I don’t think so. US spending on police seems to be middle of the road compared to other countries, whereas the US is way ahead of other countries in two areas - police killings and guns per capita.

I agree with many on here that cops lie, they are racist, and they do their jobs poorly. With that said, haven’t we put cops in an impossible situation by having more guns than people in the US? When so many morons are armed, cops have no idea who has a gun and who doesn’t, so they assume everyone has a gun. European countries have major issues with racism, but they don’t have near the level of police killings, and I think the difference is the number of guns in the US.

So, maybe that’s an argument for abolishing police - it’s an impossible job. I guess that’s one answer. I would argue that major gun reform would also be effective, and it would also reduce mass shootings, suicides, etc. Cops should be in favor of major gun control laws, but obviously they are not. Hopefully many, many more cops will be arrested, which will prompt them to seek reform.

I'm all for marrying gun abolition with cop abolition

LOL - What is this stream-of-consciousness nonsense? Did you play under power lines or eat paint chips as a kid? Would explain quite a bit.

I understand people that are skeptical of abolition as a concept. But I wish that those people would bring the same energy and skepticism to questioning reform and the fact that reform has got us to where we are now.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and suggest it is probably multi-variate and also that the analysis would run the risk of co-linearity among correlates.

this is a good flip on the issue, and I also think it does a good job of highlight the perceived stakes of people in this matter where someone who currently gets protection by police doesn't have much skin in the game on the success of reform, but the perceived lack of protection that results from their understanding of abolition is scary

Yeah. But the sad truth is the reform vs. abolition debate is taking place on the margins of the population. Growing margins, but margins nonetheless. But I don't see any other way to advance a real agenda except for abolition winning this battle and then advancing to take on the status quo and MOAR policing sides.

I think I could be talked into this trade. Don't want to give up guns when high school diploma having billy the kid is driving a fucking tank for the local sheriff department of a town with a 30K population.

I just don't see how cops really help much of anything in almost all situation.

I would be cool turning 90% of the police force into social service positions, and then focusing on special departments to fight actual serious crime.

Also legalizing drugs and ending America's most failed policy would help.

Basically. And that means firing a very large percentage of the police and hiring social workers, etc instead. Probably need to fire more police and investing in crime investigations.

Yea we don't need to convert existing cops into those roles. That reminds me of the South Park episodes where the cops became teachers.

Wow; what absurdity. Either that or live in a cocoon. Or out in the Country. You reduce the police by 90% and then use 10% of their current budgets to fight "serious" crimes, Cities would turn chaotic. I'm all for seriously reducing drug enforcement penalties but unless you are endorsing banning ALL guns (good luck with that) you would be looking at a total shit show.
