Conference Expansion: Stanford, California and SMU Join the ACC

Greatest time in the history of college football to have a developmental style P5 program. Plenty of prospects. No worries about hat swapping NIL wannabes. In reality places to attend are quite finite. We have a smart AD and gifted coach who don't bitch about change. I'm very optimistic about what lies ahead. So many fools coaching and administrating. We have studs in place. It's all good right now.

If you don't regularly go to bowl games you are a total loser program. Just because you have 4-5 doesn't immediately change expectations but wake football is no longer completely irrelevant.

We should have 2 nonp5 games a year.

Big 12 expansion talks focused on BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, Houston: Sources https://theathletic.com/news/big-12...u-ucf-cincinnati-houston-sources/5CZvjXPK0mL1

I’m surprised Memphis is not included. They typically have good football and basketball, are relatively close, they also open up the Nashville market to Big XII because it is home to a ton of Memphis alumni, and they have all that FedEx money. UCF only kind of makes sense but that would be plan B for me if one of the other mentioned schools decline.

Realize that football is the one and only driver of expansion/realignment, but all of those schools are pretty legit in hoop as well. The fighting Wes Miller's would be playing in a very good hoop conference (assuming no further Big 12 defections) with Baylor, Kansas, Texas Tech, OK State, along with Houston and BYU. There are a lot fairly recent Final 4s among that group.

Memphis is trash.

Memphis makes sense over UCF in terms of location. It's between the heart of the conference and WVU. UCF makes sense as a very successful football program despite frequent coaching changes. There's also the Florida recruiting factor. If they really want that, they can add UCF and USF and guarantee trips to Florida every year or 2 of 3 years.

BYU is the real outlier here. They recently left a conference. They don't even fit in the current wide Big 12 footprint. If they added UCF, Cincy, Houston, and Memphis (or USF), they could do three four team divisions: North, Texas, and East.

No, if Memphis is trash, they would be more at home in the SEC. Other than Vandy, what school in that conference isn't trash?

The only thing as delightful as Biff’s defense of the SEC is Pilch’s hatred of it. Going to be a fun year.

BYU's actual geographical print doesn't make sense, but there are so many random BYU fans simply because they're Mormon that it opens up almost the entire West Coast - it's like random Catholic kids in New York growing up ND football fans.

How many TVs would this actually get games on in a given market though? If we're using religious affiliation there are like 6.5 million Mormons in the U.S. compared to over 70 million Catholics. If every BYU game was going to be available on every TV in California I feel like that would have already happened.

I hate the SEC, but aren’t Georgia and Florida ranked ahead of NCSU, Clemson, and Louisville?

Those two schools are good. As much as we hate on State, they are good too. Louisville is trash. I’ve taught at USC and have done work with Miss St before and am in academia. I can say wholeheartedly that the SEC is a garbage academic conference. I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if Vandy left. It’s seriously a joke.

Won’t let me edit but I’ll add that Clemson is good too.

I don't mean to suggest that BYU is Notre Dame big, but BYU draws eyes to televisions despite not being a traditional market.

The Athletic did a nice analysis of the viewership numbers from 2015-2019 and why BYU would be considered a favorite if you go simply by eyes on screens (there is, obviously, the politics element to this as well) - BYU simply holds their own when on a top-tier network (ABC, ESPN, and FOX) and has better viewership numbers than everyone else on the smaller cable networks (ESPN2, ESPNU, Fox Sports 1, etc.) Here's what their analysis found with regard to BYU and some of the other schools being considered.

Top Tier Viewership (ABC, ESPN, & FOX) - Games & Average Viewership
Big XII Teams: 36 games, 1.786M
BYU: 16 games, 1.64M
Cinci: 11 games, 1.64M
UCF: 11 games, 1.44M
Houston: 15 games, 1.42M
Boise St: 9 games, 1.18M

Secondary Network Viewership (ESPN2, ESPNU, Fox Sports 1, etc.)
BYU: 20 games, 682K
Big XII Teams: 104 games, 482K
Boise St: 29 games, 470K
Houston: 17 games, 356K
UCF: 21 games, 247K
Cinci: 11 games, 170K

It should also be noted that BYU and Boise St play a lot of their games on those secondary networks in the dreaded late night time slot (10PM ET or later kickoff), while the other schools listed do not. Simply put, while there are more eyeballs total on the East Coast, the fewer options on the West Coast mean larger audiences and potentially a larger media rights deal.

This may be a good opportunity for BYU to bring back wrestling.
