GATOR BOWL VS TEXAS A&M, psyche RUTGERS

Rutgers results from November on:

Wisconsin 52 Rutgers 3
Rutgers 38 Indiana 3 (Indiana had a massive injuries including to their #1 and #2 QBs; Indiana turned it over six times).
Penn State 28 Rutgers 0
Maryland 40 Rutgers 16

Rutgers offense is terrible. Not counting their game against Temple and an FCS opponent, Rutgers scored more than 20 once in its 10 games against Power V schools (that includes scoring 17 against Cuse). That one time Rutgers scored over 20 came against an injury decimated Indiana team who committed 6 turnovers. Rutgers offense was considerably worse than Duke. This is the worst offense WF has played this year outside of ODU and Norfolk State. Rutgers' defense is their best unit, and even so, they gave up over 50 twice and 40 to Maryland last time out. Even without the massive preparation edge, would like WF to win by 14+. Given those circumstances, WF should roll if the offense played like it did all year outside of the last half against Pitt.

Don't care. It's a bowl game and we should win. Good times all around and thanks to Rutgers for stepping up so our guys can end the season with a bowl.

Knock on wood. We *hope* we end our season with a bowl.

If the game is played it's not going to be a rout. Wake's better than Rutgers but Rutgers isn't a pushover. They beat Cuse and lost by six to Michigan before fading over the last six weeks or so of the season. Amazing to me that there are people who think Wake can just show up and blow out a P5 team.

I get cautioning against being over-confident, but Wake showed up and blew out 4 ACC teams this year

A P5 team that lost 3 of their last 4 games and hasn't practiced in a month and hasn't had any time to prepare for Wake's unusual offense.

Of course it works against both teams and more so Rutgers given their late addition to the game, but any team that has not played in 4 weeks will bring some unknowns/uncertainties to a bowl game. During the regular season a mere open date gets mentioned as to how a team will react in their next game; multiply that 4X plus transfers, opt-outs, coaches leaving, etc. and who knows how much a bowl team will resemble the one that wrapped up the regular season. All the stars point ot this being more of a factor against Rutgers, but I heard a commentator say today that when Rutgers' season ended ,they knew there was a high likelihood of covid opt-outs and that they would be at or near next man up, so they used that as a motivation to keep the players engaged and semi-prepared. I'd compare it to the career grinder golf pro on the fringes who gets a last-minute call that Kopeka tweaked his knee and won't play in the U.S. Open, so grab your clubs and be on the tee Thursday at 7:00 a.m.; puncher's chance to pull off a great storyline.

I think it all comes down to home many interceptions Hartman throws in the bowl game.

It is beyond me how any Wake Forest fan does not realize that, on a reasonably national stage, we're going to play down to their level of competition, keep it close, and possibly lose. We are who we are. This sets up for Rutgers to be a national Cinderella story while we find yet another way to competitively embarrass ourselves.

we should win this game handily. If we don't it would be disappointing.

Essentially every fanbase has people that feel this way about their teams - just look at any message board and there is someone writing this exact same thing.

Across all sports, almost every team ends the season with a loss. Rutgers, for example, is the state school of New Jersey and has an enrollment of 50,000 students. They have won 1 NCAA division 1 team championship in the history of their school, and that was fencing in 1949. As a comparison, on a "reasonably national stage," Wake Forest has won 10 NCAA division 1 team national championships.

Also, Wake Forest is 9-6 in bowl games, all time.

And that 50k person school hasn’t been to a bowl since 2014 and only backdoored their way in this year. Meanwhile our small little academic school has been to 6 straight.

Exactly.

And just to emphasize how wrong the narrative is that Wake doesn't win on the national stage, Wake has more national championships than VT, Pitt, Louisville, GT, and NC State, combined.

Yeah, I don't get the "under-performing" in a bowl game take. WF has generally played well in bowl games, and when WF has lost, it has been against schools that were favored (e.g., Wisconsin last year). Deacs don't have a history of losing as a favorite generally and not in bowl games. Both Grobe and Clawson usually beat the opponent when they have an edge.

WF has generally played well in bowl games. Hartman has not. Biff is right here.

Other than throwing two passes at the end of the Pinstripe Bowl after Newman was making his UGA transfer plans, Hartman has played in one bowl game -- the Mayo Bowl last year -- yes, his 2nd half performance was dreadful. Little unfair to claim Hartman doesn't play well in bowl games based on one game.

Although something inside me says this game does not get played, I also have the feeling we will be able to say Hartman has played well/not played well in half his bowl games. Sam is going to be ready and have a big day- if we kick it off. Time to shine!

I wonder how often, if ever, a bowl game has featured a team who won twice as many regular-season games as its opponent

I remember BYU-Michigan the year BYU won the national championship, but that was 11 wins to 6, so not quite
