Hey Cooper Kupp:

You better lose yourself in the music, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime

it means you're hungry but you're happy because you're hungry for the grind

What’s everyone making today?

Making a couple of Kenji’s pan pizzas
Buffalo dip with white beans instead of chicken
Choc chip cookies

Friends bringing over a cheese dip and an ooey gooey butter cake
Baking a pizza for lunch, and Fulton Creek Farms chicken wings are going on the smoker for tonight. Doing around 6lbs for the three of us.

Crudités and homemade ranch and blue cheese dips
Nachos
Pizzas (Mushroom/Bluecheese, Meatball/Onion, Pep/Jalapeno)

If there's room for dessert, I've got Phish food ice cream in the freezer.

we are picking up a couple pizzas from mean pies (some pop-up we've heard good things about), and then i have a ton of stoner snacks beyond that if necessary

we had a couple friends potentially coming over but that ended up not working out, so dips/etc I'd normally do I'm gonna pass on since it'd feel a little like overkill for just the two of us

lemme know how that buff bean dip works out

Pulling my best ATS

On grad school - had a decent time, but didn’t really connect to many others (went to a Southern Baptist Seminary) In fact, probably one of the best compliments I ever received was from a boss who asked, “You didn’t have a lot of friends at seminary, do you?”

On Wrestling: Palma needs to roll back a few more years. While setting might be key - the NWO era was so much fun to watch with friends in college.

On food: making some crispy sushi rice tonight. Decent snacking food as I will be the only in the household watching the game.

On qualifying interview questions - I don’t think it matters all that much as long as you don’t pull out a “I’ve never heard that question before” w/r/t some pretty run of the mill question.

On the topic of interviews, are any other academics doing or hosting virtual job talks?

Our department voted to shift to virtual for a tenured track hire. I’ve heard other departments are doing it. So far so good, but I really don’t like hiring someone who I may work with for the next 20-30 years and who may be at my retirement party without meeting them first.

We’ve done some virtual hires. It’s a bit awkward during the free form question answer sessions with large groups of faculty or grad students. The seminars have all gone pretty well. One guy we hired is in the office two doors down from me and all of our interactions have been fine so far but we are not going to be best friends. You can tell if they are a nice person and a good colleague on zoom, future good friend and collaborator is much harder to ascertain.
