Pro Life / Pro Choice Debate

Right. I fully believe their anti-abortion crusade is more about controlling women and subjugating a class of people than it is about following Jesus. Otherwise, they would give a shit when the kids are born.

Yes. But there are true believers who don’t understand that’s the point and fervently believe in protecting embryos and fetuses. So don’t be surprised if that subset goes after IVF.

I fully expect them to go after IVF. My point is that they have to be opposed to IVF according to their own logic. As for the true believers, the thread MDMH posted a page or two back does an excellent job of explaining how this is a Frankenstein's monster situation, with the elites using the issue to get voters on their side, but eventually losing control of them. That's basically the story of the Republican Party and Fox News over the last 20 years. The inmates are now running the asylum.

The IVF debate is fascinating to me. I have a good friend who's wife has gone off the deep end on social media. One half of her posts are anti-choice, even going so far as to say only a "psychopath" would get an abortion. The other half of her posts are dedicated to the difficulties surrounding IVF. Now, I am not medical expert, but my understanding is that IVF treatment results in the destruction of multiple fertilized eggs, also known as embryos. How is this not incredibly hypocritical? Logically, I think the evangelical right must go after IVF, but for some reason they have been hesitant to go there.

IVF does not necessarily involve the destruction of fertilized eggs. One option is to implant all the fertilized eggs, and another option is to keep the fertilized eggs frozen indefinitely.

This.

What percentage of IVF treatments involves implanting only the exact number of fertilized eggs they intend to carry to term?

I really think it’s simpler than that. The people high up don’t care about controlling women. They care about keeping a sizable group of people riled up enough to vote for Republican politicians so that they don’t have to pay taxes to help poor people and minorities.

I see what you’re saying but that group isn’t like “fuck the poors, fuck everyone who isn’t white, but I am all for women’s rights.” It’s all part of maintaining white supremacist patriarchy.

Yeah, I totally agree. My point is that it doesn’t matter what the issue is, they just want a riled up base to continue to vote for their party. If there was an issue that got people more angry and motivated to vote and had nothing to do with reproductive rights, they’d jump on that and make it a wedge issue instead.

Right, those are the elites, who created this monster that is now running things. Their issue now is that they riled them up too much. Exhibit A is the rise of OAN and NewsMax, because Fox News doesn't deliver a strong enough hit anymore.

How common is it to implant all of the fertilized eggs? Isn't the normal process to select the strongest and most viable? And isn't freezing them kind of like what I do with the bananas that are about to expire that I know I'm not going to eat but feel badly about throwing directly into the trash?

Yep

Some women plan to have them all implanted and some (probably most) do not. Most IVF specialists will only implant 2 at a time (depends on the mom's age and other factors). Frozen fertilized eggs can be implanted years later.

I’m gonna go look up in the Bible how god feels about frozen protobabies.

Definitely. But I can’t think of a wedge issue for the right that doesn’t ultimately come down to race, class, or gender.

Bill Maher had a great line about how you know an embryo isn’t a baby because you can stick it in the freezer. And if you could do that with babies you’d have yuppies freezing their baby for a month or so to go travel.

There are plenty of evangelicals who have a hard time with IVF. What I hear is that they want agreements put into place that (a) a couple will agree to implant any fertilized embryo or (b) agree to donate it to be implanted in another woman.
