Not knowing about fascism and posting about it to own a dude on a message board is a pretty privileged position too imo

i'm a little confused about the specification of early 20th century fascism in Italy/Germany vs whatever we're comparing it to.

what are the appreciable differences WRT this conversation?

I think everybody would do well to read at least a Wikipedia page about Italian and German fascism. Perhaps some Dylan Riley for the academics in the room.

It’s not as simple as some of y’all seem to think it is

I am guessing this is directed at me, can you give a specific Riley reference? He's got a loooooooong CV.

first the came for the content, then the came for the content police

yea idk

I mean, I had to learn about this stuff as a child cuz my people got genocided the last time fashy whites wanted to party

birdman’s concerns as the father of queer children in a red state are real, too

Another ph-mdmh rehash theory arguments from the 80s to own each other is pretty trivial by comparison

Idk. What are they? Seems like an important starting point before we speculate on who belongs to a demographic group that’ll get massacred more brutally

Nah mainly to Ph tbh but his work will appeal to all of us academic types who like to talk theoretically about fascist ideology:

The Civic Foundations of Fascism in Europe is a great one. Comparative study of Spanish, Italian, and Romania. He’s got great stuff in NLR about Trump-era fascism, too

i'm pretty sure that's the whole point of the "first they came for me" thing

It’s meant to inspire solidarity against fascism. Not to earn points in a message board argument.

I just thought that exchange between mdmh and Ph kinda sucked.

I think Ph's point is valid. Us white guys can, if confronted, easily say "Oh yeah, I totally hate Mexicans, you shouldn't beat me up!"

PH is seemingly incapable of intersectional political analysis, and I don’t think it’s helpful to entertain his narrow-mindedness. If PH refuses to respect my political concerns, dismissing my agency as “privilege” on the basis of my race, then he can get fucked, simple as that. I don’t owe him a goddamn thing. Solidarity means respecting each other and sharing a goal, not feeling entitled to white political surrogacy.

I feel like you both treat each other's arguments simplistically because you really just want to dunk on each other. We need a mdmh-Ph beer summit or something.

I don’t need to read about Italian/German fascism to learn about how American white people have treated marginalized groups. Those fascists were inspired by the success of Jim Crow that my grandparents lived through.

No need for a suffering Olympics though. MDMH just underestimates how bad things can get.

Do you want to talk about fascism or do you want to talk about American racism. You're a sociologist. They're distinct entities. Even in the US, what you're describing is distinct from the brand of fascism that is rising around us. Here's a good primer on the ideological underpinnings of contemporary American fascism: https://johnganz.substack.com/p/the-enigma-of-peter-thiel

For what it's worth, your posts make me feel about as indignant towards you as mdmh's do to you. My grandparents fled fascism and I lost a lot of relatives and whole lines of my family during one of the last true expressions of fascism at the state level. I grew up surrounded by anti-Semites, so please know that the prospect of fascism in the US that relies on conspiracy theories about Jewish globalism and puppetry is a very real concern to my people, too. I've been learning about this (and how to prepare for this) since I was 10 years old.

My substantive point is that fascism is a specific thing and a thing that you could learn about in depth, just as you do with your area of expertise, if you wanted to. I just think you both have lost the script.

Fascism is going to be bad for the people that it's always been bad for: those who, in a given society, are at the bottom of the stratification order because a segment of society considers those people to be convenient targets of reactionary rage or a fundamental challenge to local/national ideas about racial purity. If y'all wanna play ID politics, then have at it, but there's a wealth of empirical research in the world that suggests that you're both being myopic and, frankly, wrong in this debate.

socio-biological purity probably makes more sense than racial purity in that post above, but I can't edit the post

oh well

Speaking of Fascism... Orban will be a headline speaker at the CPAC conference in Texas next month.

15% corporate minimum tax and elimination of carried interest loophole.

something about SALT but that is pretty much gone anyway.

Strick, your post seems like you want a detailed discussion of the tread of the boot that’s about to be around our necks. It’s unnecessary but yeah, it’s probably what leftist academics were doing during the rise of Nazis.

I certainly don’t think a big Dem loss in November will help and it’s horrible to think that.

I love this part of the article:

“The reconciliation package, which Democrats hope to pass without needing GOP votes, was revealed hours after the Senate passed a bipartisan bill aimed at boosting U.S. competitiveness with China by subsidizing the domestic production of semiconductors.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., had previously warned that Republicans would not back that China competition bill if Democrats continued to pursue an unrelated reconciliation legislation.”

Sounds like Schumer play McConnell.
