BillBrasky Memorial Political Chat Thread

Yeah. It looks like it’s Manchin’s plan. He shit on BBB during his statement.

Sinema and the Senate parliamentarian are the potential road blocks now. At the risk of being an optimist, when nothing in the past few years indicates that I should be, I think both will work out and this will pass the Senate. Could also have a SALT road block in the House, but I think Pelosi et al will be able to whip enough votes in the House.

Strick, your post seems like you want a detailed discussion of the tread of the boot that’s about to be around our necks. It’s unnecessary but yeah, it’s probably what leftist academics were doing during the rise of Nazis.

I certainly don’t think a big Dem loss in November will help and it’s horrible to think that.

What in the actual fuck, man - leftist academics were either rounded up and murdered or were in exile in the United States. It's the literal foundation of our field! The ISR and BASR at Columbia were foundational for statistical and survey-based social research, as well as the home of the now infamous Frankurt School. Those were scholars in exile, who believed that they would be murdered by German fascist. The New School took on the some of the most important political philosophers of the 20th century like Arendt and sociologists like Schutz. who fled from actual fascists who were trying to murder them.

This is the kind of stuff that I take exception to. Like, quit opining about stuff you clearly don't even want to try and understand?

Do you realize how ignorant you sound with some of this shit? You're not militant at all, so don't talk to me about boots on your neck until you join your local DSA chapter and start doing weekend combat trainings... Otherwise, you're no better or worse than anybody else opining from the sidelines.

Man, why do you post stuff like this? I don't get you sometimes.

The whole adage about not learning history making you destined to repeat it is exactly how we ended up in this shitstorm to begin with and you're trying to dunk on leftist academics who were murdered for being leftists or exiled from their homes (and had countless family members murdered for either their ethnic or political identity). You're not going to find a sympathetic ear with me about this. I'm a student of history because otherwise you make stupid ass mistakes (or just sound like a dork) in ways that impede the ultimate goal of universal human emancipation.

birdman - this is an interesting tweet in light of our conversation about tactics yesterday:

So basically all you needed was to call manchin an obstructionist really?

But he's been cast as an obstructionist going on 2 years now.

By all accounts, Biden has been working him behind the scenes bringing in experts he trusts (like Larry Summers) who are basically accusing him of stalling progress without any sort of coherent rationale. It turns out that even shills have limits. Nobody wants to feel alienated on Martha's Vineyard, man. I've heard that's the worst form of cancellation.

Today I looked at my mother’s 1955 high school yearbook.

Solidly white. Administration, staff, students. Plenty of Jewish folks. Plenty of poor and not poor folks. Plenty of folks with various political ideals (according to my mother). No people of color. None.

They had their own school.
