2022 races (and 2021 for weird commonwealths like Virginia)

Gotta love it. Make them run for office in the real world instead of the conservative echo chamber.

This is certainly a surprise - Peltola will be the first Democrat to represent Alaska in the House of Representatives in a half-century. And lol at Sarah Palin.

lol, she had about 40% of the vote after the first round, with Palin and another Republican largely splitting the rest.

So there was likely a combination of Republican voters picking her as their second option, and Republican voters who just decided to leave Palin off their ballot.

It's up for a rematch in November, with the same three candidates. Will be interesting to see what happens - I assume the party will try to get one Republican to drop out?

What could that do if Republicans already rejected the dude and enough didn’t pick Palin as a second choice?

Nice to see Republicans fall in these off-schedule elections. That’s one trick they use to stay in power. But that may not hold as reliable voters shift to Democrat and Republican depend on fringe voters.

It's their first time with ranked choice voting and it looks like a few thousand people may have not made a second choice. If there are only one Rep and one Dem, it would remove the confusion and they could lean hard on partisanship to get people to back the Republican regardless of who they are. Plus turnout will likely be significantly higher in the general.

It’s so dumb to fill a House seat for 4 months.

It’s not dumb to fill it. It’s dumb to wait then have a whole new election. Every member of Congress should designate someone to take over their spot until the next election cycle in case they die or resign.

Worth saying again… Sarah palin just lost to democrat in Alaska! Red wave my ass.

I mean…the discouragement of partisanship is one of ranked choice votings greatest features.

proponents of ranked choice say that it helps eliminate fringe candidates (i.e. crazy ass mf'ers) and helps whittle it down to serious candidates. I'd say it worked perfectly in Alaska last night. Majorie Taylor Greene is letting out a sigh of relief that she is still the trashiest, craziest member of congress.

so are Dems expected to hold the seat through Nov or is this a temporary thing when they find someone better than Palin

Who knows! I'd bet it goes R, but I would've bet the same thing yesterday.

The primary for the November general happened the same day, and the same three candidates moved forward (including Palin). So Peltola holds the seat through the end of the year, and there will be a rematch in November for the next term.

As for expectations:

I don't get how it being a Dem win means a Rep has a decent shot two months later, but I guess they expect high turnout in Nov? I know Murkowski is not v popular with the MAGAs, but can't remember what that election looks like in Nov.

It was the first time Alaska had a ranked choice election. In the first round, the Dem got about 40% of the vote and two Republicans split the other 60%. So Republican candidates still got way more first choice votes, but only about half of the 3rd place Republicans' voters put Palin as their second choice, and 20% left the 2nd choice blank.

So yes, higher turnout, plus time to educate voters on ranked choice voting. But even a toss up is a pretty big deal for a Democrat in Alaska.

Also, there might be enough Republicans who did not want Sarah Palin and left her off as a second choice.

Absolutely. I wonder if they'll release the full results, I'd like to know how many of Palin's voters filled in a 2nd choice.

i'm guessing palin voters are dumb enough to not understand.
