Liberty @ WF - Saturday 9/17 5 pm - ACCN

It’s always interesting watching a scrabbling QB that is clearly being coached, ineffectively, to stay in the pocket.

not sure why we don’t have some WR end runs or rb tosses to get to edge when teams are so effective jamming up the middle. we were going nowhere up middle and seems a Keshawn areound the end or toss sweep to Justice would add a wrinkle to keep the D honest.

He did it for a whole season too.

Clawson will play the better QB. I just think we've seen Hartman play much worse than this and not get pulled. Maybe Clawson has that much confidence in Griffis. I don/t know.
From Clawson post-game:
"Sam was not on. He missed some throws he can usually make in his sleep. Some of those quick outs and quick hitches to the boundary — they were open and we just overthrew them. Then on third down we threw a few in the dirt."

It's not like he was warming up Mitch to send a message to Sam... We'll never know what would have happened if the safety played the big catch by Williams in double coverage better, and I'm thrilled that we won't. But I do think we would have seen Griffis for sure if they'd picked it and very likely if we'd gone 3 and out at the 5 minute mark.

We’re lucky libertys kicker missed both of those long field goals. He definitely had the leg.

He had a big leg, but I was watching him warm up pre game and he looked pretty inconsistent. Shout out to Matthew Dennis who remained solid for us, including the 46 yarder that tied it up at 23.
Oh yeah I mean with that leg he’s where he is because of accuracy. I’m just saying it’s not like he shanked them. Just glad he was off the mark. And yes shout out to Dennis. Only matters if you get them between the uprights.

Yea he had missed 2 already this season that were less than 40 so was surprised they went for more than 50 twice.

Sam didn’t have a great night but was disappointed we didn’t adjust our play calling. Felt like we didn’t do anything to get him in a rhythm. Film room will be frustrating. We had guys open in space several times and Sam never found them.

Sam is the man, he gave his normal humble post game interview and he belted out ‘Mother So Dear’ midway thru it

Currie was smart to cancel the LIB series, they are sneaky good

I just read this thread. I knew two things about Liberty going into this game. One was that as disgusting as the school is, their team is not terrible. As stated here, Freeze can coach. The other was that their OL is huge. I don't think I realized just how huge. Post-game I think that we still have a lot of trouble with dual- threat QB's, and this guy is a good one. Also, we could still use some tackling drills. I agree we maybe should have thrown more short passes over the middle or passed more in general until the defense had to give us some room to run. Nonetheless, I'm just happy to get the W.

Edit: Props to Freeze for going for two.

Was really impressed with Liberty's kickoff kicker. Would have offered him a full ride at halftime, if I were Clawson and he was willing to transfer. It is inexplicable to me that we cannot recruit a kicker that can regularly get the ball into at least the front of the endzone every time. The Liberty kicker kicked it out of the back of the end zone more times than our kicker kicked it past the 5-yard line. That really should be a priority. Kick it out the back and let them start from the 25 every time. Right now (including last year), our kickoff kicker is not getting it done. Needs to be addressed.

Ivan struggled on kickoffs and punts. We had to resort to the pooch kick as he clearly lost confidence getting to endzone and had a couple shanks for 30ish yards. Can’t afford that vs Clemson,

One one hand I see your point about kickoffs and starting position. On the other hand I appreciate kickers who male their kicks through the goalposts. Not mutually exclusive but I will take points on the board.

We were outgained, outcoached, outplayed by a team who wanted it more. And we won. That’s certainly a new level in our program.

That said, we have got to get some more creativity in the outside running or underneath passing game. Morin and Williams are too electric to just do 5 yard out patterns.
Defensively, I don’t think we played all that poorly aside from those two runs. DB fell down on one and a 0.5% TD catch on the other.

This has been a consistent weakness under Clawson. Our KO coverage is not the best to begin with…so a kicker that can consistently kick through the end zone would help a lot. We have a good soccer team. Can we not trot one of those guys out for KOs?

Absolutely true. This was a preview of what the Clemson D will attempt to do to us…and they have a lot more talent. If our offense doesn’t show some creativity beyond the slow mesh it is going to be a long afternoon. We also have to be solid on special teams. Our performance has been average to poor on all special team units with the exception of FGs. You better believe Clemson will come after our punts…Liberty got one and Vandy was very close on a couple. It was disappointing this weakness was not addressed after the Vandy game.
