MBB Game 5: LMU Lions Sunday 2:30 pm - CBSN

I played 4A-level high school basketball and am just absolutely amazed at how little premium is now placed upon free-throws at the major college level. Hit just 75% of our free throws and that game is not very close at the end. I mean you spend months and months practicing and can't make 15-foot gifts. It's just mind boggling to me.

Edited to add: Charlie Davis and Skip Brown would have shot 75% from the line BLINDFOLDED!!!

I’m nearly 100% sure free throw shooting is better in aggregate at all levels of basketball today than 10, 20, 50 years ago.

also - there's something not right with that Australian dude with the mullet... right?
I thought he was going to punch out the white dude on his team when they got in an argument. dude had crazy eyes

Feels like the dip in the 90s and lack of rise in the 00s can be attributed to Shaq and a few other big men.

Well, since I threw out Skip Brown's name, I referenced Skip's last year as a Deacon (1976-77 season). That team's season FT% was .754. 1976-77 Team Stats
Last year's season FT% was .730. 2021-22 Team Stats

Not as big of a difference as I would have anticipated. However, it is interesting to note that Skip did average 83% that season compared to Williamson (2022) at a very impressive 86%.

I didn't average the past 40+ years but ballpark it looks like we averaged somewhere between 70-75% over that period of time. Appears to be more consistent than I would have guessed.

By and large, this team has a talent problem. There just aren’t that many guys who are impact players with the ball in their hands. Williamson gives his all, but he is s 6’1 SG with mediocre athleticism. Appleby has been good, but he is also constrained y height and an inconsistent shot. The bigs are just average at best. And Monsanto is the only guy with plus size/athleticism for his size.

They need guys like Williams and LaRavia (plus 3-4 more guys) to be a consistent, high-level team

Less talent than LMU though?

Most of the time when we have games where FT shooting is a major issue it is because of who was shooting them...

I don’t really give a shit about 1 game. But this team is going nowhere.

Ok. We know this isn’t as talented as last year’s team.

Klintman has a ton of talent. He will make a lot of money 💰 in pro basketball. Agree that this team is less talented than last year. That said, I’m slightly encouraged after the LaSalle and LMU games.

DaMari is showing signs of progress. Klintman could be special. Keller has talent. Hildreth has limitations, but is better than I thought. Hope Ituka returns soon.

If you are hoping for a Final 4, this team is not going to get there, but the team has pieces and will be a lot more fun to watch than every WF team, but one over the last decade.

game was flukey and i like the way team is trending.

This is the latest that a non conference November loss has stayed with me and really bothered me. At work today and just catch a wave of anger and frustration and just had to bite my lip and clench my fists. An absolute embarrassment of a loss. Zero positives to take away. How it took us so long to realize that we could have whatever we wanted inside was truly disheartening. We stopped shooting 3s. Penetrated and dominated. Then pissed and shit all over ourselves.

I’d rather a team be boring and make the tourney.

I hope Klinttman can make something of his skills. He seems slow right now.

I thought it was unrealistic to expect a tournament bid after losing the vast majority of our production from a bubble team. Still do. Hopefully Carr and Monsanto stick around and we can build around them, Ituka, Keller and Klintman.

And Hildreth as much as people love to hate.

Hildreth is a good piece to have, plays hard and has some skills, but I think he needs to play within himself. He’s not athletic enough to just take guys off the dribble and to finish in traffic consistently.

its just year 2 but we’re already pretty sure that there will be no NCAA bid as we have no margin for error. I’ve been around for awhile and fell in love with Wake basketball as a kid watching CD. College basketball is all about making the dance now and its hard to recover from what Wellman and Manning did to the program. I don’t count Manning’s play in game so for me this will be 12 years without a bid. I like Forbes a lot but the college game, coaching, recruiting and promotion raced by us over the last 10 years. I once felt the minimum bar was what GDO gave us, now I’m not sure we even get back to the upper half of a weak conference. I suspect there are others like me and it’s reflected in our attendance. Never thought the Wake sport I’d be most excited about would be football.
