Labor/Workers movements thread

As of Tuesday morning, the two sides are quite far apart. The union is demanding a minimum salary of $54,000, while the university wants pay decreases.

Jesus...they are miles apart. Respect the ambitious demands from the union. I lived in Santa Barbara for a year and the housing costs are a primary reason why I moved back to NC.

Trying to get that side hustle. Is there a scab website I can sign up on? Overqualified but I’ll grade for 1 dollar a test.

Yeah, and there are four bargaining units involved in this strike, too, which makes it even more complicated. This was inevitable after what the UC system did to the TAs at UC Santa Cruz, though.

I mean by the nature of being affiliated with the government I imagine the UC system like would be completely unable to give raises over X%

I don't think that's true. Unfortunately, there is a ton of variation across systems in terms of compensation for non-tenure track academic workers in public education. A lot of them aren't unionized, either. In the UC system, though, most are represented by UAW and the adjuncts are represented by AFT.

I am not sure about with post-docs but with Grand students on teaching assistantships or research assistantships it would be super easy to enact a large increase by increasing their appointment time. Almost every University hires graduate assistants on part time appointments, largely to justify poverty level wages. E.g., at my last department all grad students were on 1/3 research assistantships and got paid ~$20,000/yr. So we could have bumped them to $30K/yr simply by increase their appointments to half time without adjusting their job class or pay grade. (Still have to find the money somewhere.)

And the contract usually determines the "terms" of the appointment. Right now, the Chancellor is acting like RAs and TAs are employed at 100% time, but they never have been in the UC system. Incredibly disingenuous, but management is gonna management. Were the current arrangement to stay in place (per the last contract), most RAs would remain employed between 25%-50% time, and most TAs would remain employed at 50%.

Pay special attention to this portion:

Freight rail companies urged lawmakers to intervene if a deal can’t be reached.

“Let’s be clear, if the remaining unions do not accept an agreement, Congress should be prepared to act and avoid a disastrous $2 billion a day hit to our economy,” Ian Jeffries, president and CEO of the Association of American Railroads, said in a statement.

Should we really be leaving our vital industries like rail at risk of not functioning cause annoying idealogues want 300% raises?

Don't most union people smoke ? That's bad for you.

Two unions failed to pass the union negotiated contract, one by 0.88% because they want paid sick leave. However it won’t really matter because Congress, especially Republicans would love nothing more than to use the Railway Labor Act to fuck some workers hard.

or, stated differently: "paid sick leave is a bridge too far," says workers with paid sick leave
