MBB Game 23: @ Duke - Tuesday 7 pm - ACCN

Maybe a hot take, but I didn't think Kyle's no-call was a moving screen. Looked like he was set and kept his arms in on the slo-mo. The most frustrating thing was immediately calling the "moving" screen on Appleby right after it. That's the inconsistency that drives everybody crazy.

We also recovered from Filipowski’s screen, only to have Carr give a weak hand check to leave Filipowski wide open at the top of the key. Carr’s defense on Filipowski for the only 3ish minutes we asked him to guard him was really bad. He got two wide open looks and a break out layup. I know he’s good, but it didn’t look like Carr could stay within 3 steps of him.

Our guys were tired at the end especially Carr and Tyree. Both asked to do alot and you could really see it on Carr's face the last few minutes. Our team plays hard and if we shoot they way we normally do we most likely win this one. Due to our big man situation Carr is asked to do alot. Don't have a deep bench. Hopefully he puts on some weight and muscle in the offseason. he is a perfect fit for Wake.

Daivien was -17 in 19 minutes. 0 points
Am a DW fan. When he is cooking, WF almost never loses, but don't think WF can play him right now.

He's clearly not right. Just watching him go and up down the court, you can see that he's laboring. Plus, he's getting beat on D. Realize that WF has no guard options right now, but in the last two games, Davien is 1 for 13 from the field and has not drawn a single foul. I'm sure its killing Davien (and Forbes who loves him and needs someone to spell Tyree, Cam and DaMari), but you could make an argument that WF wins both of the last two games if Davien doesn't play and whomever gets his minutes doesn't shoot and just plays average D. Rough situation. Injuries suck.

Per ShotQuality we were projected to win 82-67 based on shot quality and expected makes. 89% chance to win.

#GottaMakeShots
Which makes a lot of sense considering: missed open threes, Duke making a high percentage of (low value) mid range jumpers, and Wake missing a handful of layups around the rim - granted this was due to Duke's interior presence

unfortunately I completely agree. Might have meant more minutes for Marsh or Bradford and playing big more of the game, but I think that is our best bet to at least be better on D and rebounding and hope for the best on O as Davien is really a detriment to the team (at this point)

It's hard for me to watch us lose, especially at Duke.

After the CP3 nonsense back in the day, in Durham, I can usually watch parts of the game, but not all. Watched condensed game.

  • Appleby clearly with a 3, not a 2.
  • Monsanto got hit, but basically, that was a flop.
  • The kicked ball was a farce.
  • Carr is a good player, we need him, but just gets killed on backscreens and switches, when he is at the 4, primarily.
  • You can tell Rece Davis loves Monsanto. Some of his makes are silly good.
  • Our bigs aren't that bad, and the primary 2, Marsh and Bradford, need to stay at WFU and learn from Forbes for at least another year. Could be VERY formidable, especially if Bobi makes the anticipated leap.

Other than that --- team plays really hard. Credit to Forbes.

Bizarre that we have no Taylor, McCray OR J. Ituka.

I think our bigs are that bad. Marsh is a fun weapon but they are both so slow and have bad hands. Our best bet is Keller improving enough to play the 5 regularly alongside Carr, or just playing small ball with Carr at the 5.

And Davien essentially can't play because of his back. WF has one true healthy guard on the entire roster. Appleby. Cam went from 2/3 to a 2/1, and that is it for the roster. Where is Myles Lester when you need him? (kidding about Lester), but WF could really use a mediocre combo guard to steal a few minutes.

Marsh can do one thing well: slam a lob pass. That is it. His defense is poor, opposing bigs almost always out-anticipate him for rebounds, and his basketball instincts are just way behind. Maybe they get there. Hope so. Bradford has similarly poor instincts and is less athletic than Marsh. Bradford is strong, and when he is positioned correctly he can be OK on defense. He also will occasionally block a shot, which Marsh never does. Pretty unbelievable that both Marsh and Bradford have played 2 or more seasons of college basketball are 7-0 and have zero post moves. Unless they catch the ball down low with no defender between them and the basket, neither have any hope of scoring. Might want to work in the Mikan drill for each guy at every practice?

Good reference.

Maybe go over to the dark side and hire former coach of the Greensboro Swarm, Joe Wolf, to teach them a jump hook, too.

Agree with all this.

Granted, it's highlights, so it's only showing the good stuff, but I thought there was the scope for so much more on the offensive end from Bradford based on this. He's gotta get back to moving this well. I guess a couple of his best back to the basket moves were bullying Manek, but he's going toe to toe with some legit Big 12 bigs as an underclassman here, and just looks less stiff and way more decisive. Couple moves/counter moves, which we just haven't seen. At least he's not trying to do too much when he's out there. Both he and Marsh have played pretty soft this year. I'm not giving up yet, though.

This is the same guy? Bradford right now plays below the rim. If he can get back to that level, it would be huge!
