MBB Game 25: UNC-CH at the LJVM - Tuesday -- 7 pm ESPN

We have to get wins over UNC and Duke for the simple subjective reason that the Committee will try to include UNC and Duke in the tourney and we need to be ahead of them. Conveniently, Lunardi currently has 7 ACC teams getting in. Guess where the line of demarcation is. After Duke and UNC and before Wake Forest.

We certainly don't want to allow the convenient excuse of picking the top 7 teams in the ACC standings.

We need to finish ahead of UNC and then, if given the opportunity, prevent another VT ACC tournament championship.

It took so much weird shit to happen for UNC to win by 9 in Chapel Hill. They hit nine 3's (38%, and they shoot 30% on the year), Leaky went off (career high and made 3/5 threes, while shooting 30% on the year), they made a ton of free throws, and scored over 2 point per possession off of our 14 turnovers (for 30 points).

We also uncharacteristically turned the ball over.

I don't like their odds of repeating nearly any of those things. Give me the Deacs by double digits.

Shocking stuff!

3 points made per game in ACC play:
WFU: 10.1
Opponents: 9.0

UNC averages 21 FTA per game in conference and makes almost 16 per game (1st and 2nd in the league, respectively).

We give up lots of 3PT to everyone. They always shoot and make lots of free throws. We need us both to be uncharacteristic at these things.

We've really helped the acc's 3pt %

Way beyond the Durham ditches, there's a place like Hell,
Where twenty thousand sons of bitches call it Chapel Hill.

So, piss on Carolina 'lina
Piss on Carolina 'lina
Piss on Carolina 'lina
Go to hell State!

Oh, they're bastards born, and they're bastards bred,
And when they die, they'll be bastards dead.

So, piss on Carolina 'lina
Piss on Carolina 'lina
Piss on Carolina 'lina
Go to hell Duke!
And Fuck State!

30 points off 14 TOs boggles the mind.

I'm concerned about Bacot after our inability to manage DJ Burns. Especially given Bacot has better moves around the basket and plays harder (both subjective, I know).

But Burns just outmuscled/out massed our team, I feel like our bugs hold their ground better against Bacot (who will get his points)

I'm not too worried about Bacot getting points as long as they're not second chance points.

NC State wisely exploited the DJ Burns matchup. Bacot is 3rd on the team in FGA's, even after adjusting for FT attempts, behind Love and Black.

I would be extremely surprised if UNC went to Bacot as often as NC State went to Burns.

Wonder what version of Nance we'll get. Kind of an x-factor since he barely played in our first game and has been both good and awful for them recently.

I'd guess they start with the same defensive assignments that they did last time out, putting Black on Cam and Davis on Monsanto... Based on recent play I'd sure as hell be careful about putting a 6'0" guy on Damari...

Bacot's going to get his 20/12 or so, and just because Leaky hit a few 3's against us doesn't mean we should change how we defend him (or how we don't defend him, really). Worked fine for Duke. Just have to stop the RJ/Love/Nance crew from putting up 50 on us. Of course we gave up season highs to RJ Davis in points, 3's, and shooting percentage. Let's maybe not do that.

UNC has barfed on itself over the last two games largely because they have neglected getting the ball to their biggest matchup advantage: Armando Bacot.

Against Pitt, UNC lost by 1. They are the worst 3 point shooting team in the ACC; yet, they took 27 three pointers in the game (made 5), while Bacot attempted a total of 10 shots (Caleb love took 18 shots, RJ Davis 15). Against Duke (a game that was tied with 2 minutes to go), UNC again shot 27 threes (Duke shot only 11), while Bacot took only 12 total shots. Again, Davis and Love combined for 31 shots (and made 10). Hope UNC continues to allow less efficient players to take shots. Understand that sooner or later Love and Davis will have a game where they make a larger percentage of shots, but just so mindlessly stupid for a poor three point shooting team to take 54 three pointers in two close losses while their best player takes only 22 shots.
