MBB Game XXVI: Georgia Tech @ LJVM - Saturday 5pm - ACCN

Maybe he has become the focal point for all defenses at this point?

Maybe? I'd certainly try to stop Ty from getting into the lane. And I damn sure would try to make Damari put the ball on the floor. Not sure I'm worried about Ty beating me from deep.

Or maybe he's getting tired. Looking at 54% to 38% to 20% - tough to say fatigue is not AN issue, even if you don't believe it to be THE issue.

Here is the list of players in P6 conferences playing 95% or more of their team's minutes in conference play:

1. Ty Appleby, WF, 95.5%
2. Markquis Nowell, KSU, 95.2% (recent addition to the list)

I would think that if coaches thought it were a great idea for their best players to play 95% of the team's minutes, more would do it. Forbes himself tried to get Ty a breather against UNC, but we had a quick 0-6 run, and Ty was back in the game.

Nowell is also extremely important to his team. His O rating is steadily declining. Maybe it's because teams are focusing on him. Or maybe he's getting tired.

I still can’t believe Pastner has an ACCT championship under his watch. He’s a joke of a coach, IMHO. Deacs by a million.

NC State this year reminds me of that GT team. A good team, kind of out of nowhere, making the coach look better than he likely is.

Ewing's Georgetown team won the Big East tournament that same week. Covid conference tournaments don't really count the same.

That team had one NBA player and he wasn’t the tournament MVP or ACC POY on the roster.

A nice win by a comfortable margin Saturday and a week to rest should be beneficial to Appleby and the whole team for that matter.

Pour one out for that 2014 Georgia Tech team that rolled into Winston at 12-11 (2-6) without their best player, Robert Carter, yet put one of the nails in Buzzy's coffin with a 79-70 victory. After beating up on a pathetic non-conference schedule, Buzzy scored home wins against UNC and NCSU, and was actually 14-6 (4-3) going into a home match-up with #2 Syracuse earlier that week. We lost a reasonably close game against them, then proceeded to crap the bed by losing to GT, which would become the second of a seven-game losing streak.

Marcus Georges-Hunt scored a career-high (gasp!) 23, and, as always, that big goof Daniel Miller had a field day inside with 16 and 14 (7 ORBs!) McKie had over a third of our points with 26. CMM got hurt in the first half, as did GT's leader in points and assists, Trae Golden.

Wow their lineup is really small. Wouldn’t mind going small and putting our 5 best offensive players on the floor and just piling up points.
I know coaches at the college level do that a lot but I'll never understand why you'd go small against a smaller team.... Seems like you'd want to use your big guys as an advantage and just let them eat, right?

Not really in our case because both of our traditional centers contribute very little from an offensive perspective. I guess you could put Marsh out there and just try and lob it to them every play. Carr is still 3 inches taller than their starter at the 5 so it’s not like we would be playing down to their size very much.

I have always been confused by this too.

Often comes down to: Quickness and explosiveness of a smaller lineup beats size.

Understandable, but usually if a team has a 6-7 center, he is a stretch 5 and can shoot the 3 ball and/or beat Marsh/Bradford off the dribble with a pump fake and drive. We don't want Marsh or Bradford out there having to guard that if we can help it. Since Carr is already much taller than whoever they can put out there, and we are extremely efficient with him at the 5, I like us going to that, and then rotating Marsh in for the PnR lobs. I don't really think this is a game where Bradford should get a ton of time. He is much better utilized against old school big men like Bacot, where he can bang down low and not worry about stepping out too much. Marsh is the same way defensively, but at least he can catch alley-oops.
