Spring Football 2023

Trey Boll is the TE who moved to LB; Jaeger Bull is gone.

There is a desperate need at CB. That's going to be a rough-looking position if the only player with multiple college starts (Caelen Carson) is one who's dealt with injuries each of the last two years.

They also need a DT or two but that's a tougher evaluation because Bryce Ganious was virtually a non-factor all spring and they've got the D-3 DT coming in (Helbig). If one or both of them handles the adjustment well, they've got something to work with.

Clawson loves the depth of the OL and said he feels like even though they lost 3 starters, they think the depth of the position has improved since last season. Part of that is because Luke Petitbon and George Sell both missed last year dealing with injury recoveries from late 2021.

Actually think LB is a position of strength coming out of spring. Chase Jones, Jacob Roberts and Quincy Bryant is a solid trio for two starting spots, and then you throw in healthy returns of Dylan Hazen and Eldrick Robinson II, all of a sudden there's depth.

Considering we just added two DT's from the portal, I was thinking that they probably wouldn't go to the well a 3rd time, but considering the turn over at the position, you're probably right. It also seems we are always looking for CB's every season.

Has anyone seen any updates on Gavin Holmes at Texas?

Gavin Holmes report from the local newspaper:

When asked about Holmes this week, fellow defensive back Jahdae Barron answered that the newcomer's speed and athleticism stood out. Barron said Holmes is "good at high-pointing that ball." He later shared that Holmes recorded a game-winning interception during a practice drill called "Red Zone Lockout."

This fall, Holmes will compete for one of the two starting cornerback positions. Texas has a returning starter in Ryan Watts, but head coach Steve Sarkisian has said he's keeping his options open.

"I think Gavin Holmes is performing at a high level," Sarkisian said.

Amazing how much any CB looks better when their D line can get a good rush....

The Deacs seem set at safety, but the Deacs still have a need at CB.

Think a solid transfer player would get time in 2023, particularly given that WF always seems to have a cluster of injuries at that spot. Really tough to assess OL depth because OL don't rotate in as much. Not sure how desperate the need is there. Seems like WF feels pretty good at TE since the Deacs moved Jaeger Bull from TE to LB.

CB is the top priority, and then BPA at either DL, LB or OL.
are you referring to Trey Boll from TE to LB? pretty sure Jaeger Bull graduated. but I agree with your overall assessment

Yeah, I'd lean DT over CB for a portal addition. Both positions thin, but there's a lot of young guys at CB and I think you can play young guys sooner. I'm also high on Jones as the other CB starter. I'd hate to have true freshmen DTs in the 2-deep going into the ACC.

Even if Ganious is a stud (a la Fox, Turner), we've got Pointer, the D3 kid, and then a bunch of questions. Would love a solid 4.

CBS Sports has takeaways on each ACC Team coming out of the Spring

Here is their takeaway on the Deacs:

Wake Forest

Sam Hartman is more replaceable than you think: Reports out of Wake Forest's spring practice session suggest that Mitch Griffis was excellent as the first-team quarterback, and his 19-of-29 performance for 300 yards passing in the spring game backed that up. Hartman transferred to Notre Dame after five seasons with the Demon Deacons that included an ACC record 110 touchdown passes. But Griffis is equipped to replace him as a fourth-year sophomore who has waited his turn and thrived when called upon. He knows the system and is more mobile than Hartman, which should come in handy considering that Wake Forest ranked 104th nationally with 2.92 sacks allowed per game last season.

I think a lot of us thought Hartman was pretty replaceable even if we appreciated him and thought he was good.

A trio of Greene, Banks and Morin is going to help out any QB. I know we all loved AT, but the idea of Greene getting all those opportunities makes me almost giddy.

I have hope that our offense will be more like it was under Wolford, with Griffis. Which would be exciting
As long as that excitement is not like that of John's freshman season.

I feel like that might depend on the running backs as much it does Griffis. Haven't really had a RB as dynamic as Colburn that actually got the reps they deserved.

Also I do not harbor high hopes for our O-Line this year but we'll see!

Word is that Clawson is very high on the WF OL this year. Hope that "word" is correct.

If the D can stay healthy, there will not be many teams that can hang with the O.
lots of people think you can get all the way to the O by pounding away with your D but really the better way to get to the O is using some special teams
