Conference Expansion: Stanford, California and SMU Join the ACC

Essentially we are all to bow to the ACC overlords and and if you say something in support of the SEC or Big Ten than you are an idiot fan boy and why are you on a WF message board.

That’s pretty much the gist
We're not asking you to bow down and everyone knows the SEC is considered the best football conference (although the argument could be made and has been made pretty well by PH and others that top to bottom the disparity isn't that big).

The problem is that it almost feels like certain people are rooting for the ACC to fall apart which makes no sense to do if you were a Wake fan.

I consider it more anxiety about what comes next. There were people who devoted every waking hour to counting Covid deaths.

There is a difference between rooting for the ACC to fall apart and not being concerned if it does. I'm not concerned if it does. When the Big East broke up, when the ACC added Syracuse and Pitt and BC, the purity of the conference structure lost meaning. If the ACC dies it dies. we will still be in a conference. We will still fail tragically at the most inopportune times. The world keeps spinning...and the SEC and Big Ten have won the game, good for them. I respect it.

Wake should go independent, like Liberty and Notre Dame.
If we could play State, Duke, and UNC every year and get a path into the playoffs like ND has as an independent, then I’d be fine with this.

This would be suicidal. If Penn State and Texas could not make independence work with the size of their fan bases, how could we. The ACC must persevere (and will). If we have to resort to pipe dreams, Wake to the Ivy League.

An equal, but under analyzed threat to the "lesser conferences" is the transfer portal. We all risk becoming the minor leagues to the SEC and Big10. Might as well develop a pipeline relationship with a couple key teams. For example, develop some close ties with Georgia and Michigan's staffs. Doesn't have to be them, but it would cover northern and southern recruits. Have them steer top high school talent to us with the expectation that they will port to those schools in a year or two.

Why must it ?

Why is this so dumb or beyond the realm of possibility?

With transfer portals and NIL deals, why should the premier programs take too many flyers on the top high school recruits? Sure there are a few super blue chips; they will still be recruited by the big programs. There are many five stars, however, that live up to expectations. If you are a donor steering NIL money, is the money better spent on a high school recruit, or on the top college sophomores who have proven themselves at he collegiate level in a position of need?

Nah, going independent was a very serious suggestion. Notre Dame nor Liberty haven't won a national debate tournament ever and their AD offices aren't near any interstates, but seem to be fine. We should go independent.

Isn't there a debate rule that your arguement can't be "the Bible says so?" That's really going to hinder Liberty.

Liberty is in a conference for next school year

signing football players with the understanding that if they work out, they move for their most productive years to another school has to be a joke, like the ACC baseball tournament format, because nobody could believe that is a good idea.

it's really fucking dumb because our coaching staff does not want to be a fucking AAA program feeding the major leagues. They want to win championships and send players to the NFL. It would be a complete loser move to make an "arrangement" with big programs to feed them players. Even G5 and FCS schools aren't going to do that

If the ACC implodes, the only conference who could save Wake’s reputation would be the Big XII. I believe they would take every ACC leftover, (as well as any Pac-12 leftover if they also fall apart) to try and compete with the other two mega conferences.
If Wake were to join someone like the AAC or SunBelt, their place on the big stage would be gone forever.

Of course no one wants this and it won't come to pass if the ACC maintains it current status. If the ACC implodes, Wake is not well positioned to avoid AAA relegation and will not compete to win championships. This is especially true if the SEC and Big10 expand and Wake is excluded. The rest of the college landscape becomes minor league in football.

The two notions I offered are complimentary. The ACC dissolving would be a disaster to for Wake. If that happens, my suggestion is a mitigation against total irrelevance. We would be able to compete for championships at whatever level we are left in and will put more players in the NFL. I am not saying do this if the ACC remains viable.

The major problem for us as an independent would be a tv deal. We don’t bring enough eyes.

I disagree with your entire first paragraph. The Big 10 does not win championships now even with their money. Cincy just played in the final 4 without any money and the playoff is expanding so it’s even more possible to do that.
