Been trying to teach my 5yo how to swim all summer rill to no avail because she won’t listen to me. My pops says just drop her off at the pool with me and leave so she’s not distracted. Literally 6 minutes later my mom sends me a video of her jumping off the diving board and swimming to the ladder without her floaties.
Have also been trying to teach my 5yo but she is too scared right now

that's a weird thing to tell your student, damn
Seems like he was joking, but that's not cool at all.

I wasn't close to finishing when I got my post-doc. Getting the post-doc kind of forced their hand to go ahead and let me defend even though I could have spent more time improving the dissertation instead of making a ton of edits after the defense.

The “skirt” is doing her part to finish out the CT on this Friday afternoon.

Depending on how far back those two are, I think relation to job you’re applying for is just as important as current.
one i worked for a year as his startup's PR manager - that was last year

the other I worked for two years and it was a lot of formative PR/external relations stuff at a university news office - but it was 8 ish years ago - she'd easily be my best contact

i'm hoping the ED recognizes that I've been in graduate school for seven years so professional refs are gonna be a lil weird (like as a PR manager for a start up)

it was really weird and a very strange thing coming from him because otherwise he's been relatively supportive and a good dude

Then it was most likely just a bad joke.

yeah that screams "joke made by a guy who forgot how tense it is to not have this gig." don't sweat it.

IMO the university news office is prob too long ago. I’d definitely include the startup.

Exactly. Tenured professors often forget how tense things are at that stage. And for a lot of us the job market wasn’t nearly as bad as it is now.

maybe but he cracked a weird joke ("oh i'll have to tell them not to take you so you can finish your diss") when I asked him to be a ref for an earlier teaching job and now I kinda don't want to put him tbh

like i'm not sure if he'd torpedo me but it defs has me on edge
Damn, graduate supervisors can be such ass holes.

Kory, that sounds like something I would say. I’m a smartass. I would then follow it up with I’m pulling for you, I’m supporting you and let me know if you need anything else. He just needed to add one more line.

Right, it was a joke but he needed to follow up with, “just kidding! I am really excited for you and will do what I can to help you land this position and also help you finish your degree once you start the job because I and my department failed to get you the TA support you needed for this fall semester. My bad, by the way.”

I have this small patch of mountain mint in one of my garden beds, and it is absolutely bonkers how many bugs are swarming around it every afternoon. Those pollinators fucking love this plant

I never wanted to go into educational administration. My parents didn't really understand that...until they started meeting some of the people that I taught and taught with. My place was in the classroom. I've been a "performer" most of my life, whether in a choir, on a stage/bandstand, on the radio, or in the classroom. There wasn't enough money to make me give up the satisfaction of having a meaningful, guiding role in people's positive development. I never saw any administrator have as much fun and enjoyment as I did day-to-day. I remain thankful for that. Lots of 'psychic wages' in teaching.

This is spot on. There are very few aspects of an admin job that I think I’d enjoy.
