Conference Expansion: Stanford, California and SMU Join the ACC

I grew up in Eastern NC and never heard of the Parks scholarship until now.
Don’t worry, Ph. I grew up in Eastern North Carolina and never heard of it either. Granted, my hearing of it would not have mattered in any way. That’s meant to be an insult to me and N.C. State. The mutual disinterest probably would have been pretty equal.
You probably were someone that would have had a chance if you wanted.

I’m not sure if Numbers is a Tier 1 lawyer, but if he is I’d like to have him arrange a similar deal for me to get cases of beer, except each time someone suggests a scenario where ND accepts being a full member of the ACC. If you care enough to post on this thread you should realize how absurd that suggestion is right now.

Depends on what you care enough to post about on this thread

I’m just here for the lawyer dick measuring

You say this as if we have some sort of right to stay at the highest level of college athletics. We do not. We are free to hop the minor league bus to Boone, Spartanburg, and Conway and cut down all the travel we want. We are likely to be forced into that -- but we are free to head down to the lower levels if we want. I'm sure Clemson and FSU would be quite happy to stay if BC & Wake (the massive revenue losers) moved along.
But WF is not a massive revenue loser. Not even close.

What’s the league payout? $30 MM? Is Wake generating that revenue for ESPN or are the Wake games a loss leader to get the Clemson games?

That's actually a valid point. Almost annually in my eastern N.C. county a kid or two will receive both a Parks (NCSU) and Morehead(UNC) scholarship, and almost invariably they'll take the Morehead. With a Parks scholarship you can go bust your ass to get a degree in electrical engineering or computer sciences along with a bunch of curve-busting foreign students, or with a Morehead you can major in some social sciences stuff with the popped collar crowd and market yourself thereafter as a "Morehead scholar".
Johnny Evans — NCSU football announcer and former QB — had quadruplets: one got the Park, one the Morehead, one a football scholarship, and one a half-scholarship for football. P crazy.

42 million per team last year. When wake is ranked they pull a million or two viewers per game so yes that would be generating revenue for ESPN.

I know some of you think that it's tiny Wake Forest and only alumni would watch but when Wake does well there's tons of interest. The underdog story is really a seller. If you don't believe me, then watch any sports movie.

My uncle who went to Indiana and a couple friends who went to WVU were texting me during the wake LSU baseball series. If we have some great years in college bball and get some more years ranked in football the WF brand could really take off into a borderline national brand

Yeah. We joke about being everyone’s “second favorite team.” And yeah, that kind of sucks when it’s fans of teams we hate. But it’s a good national brand.

Our football program has been like those fun go watch Boise St and Hawaii football teams from 10-15 years ago, except we are in a real conference. Everyone loves a high powered offense and a team who is hanging with larger programs every week. Taking bias out of it, I can see why our brand is growing.

The key is going to be holding onto Clawson. If realignment wasn't a thing, I don't see Clawson ever leaving. But it's real, and Clawson wouldn't be content coaching at a "lesser" level if we end up not playing for the same championship as the big brands. If Wake can continue having a punchers chance at the big programs and playing for the same ultimate prize, then I'm confident we hold onto Clawson.

I don't see a world where our basketball, baseball or soccer programs ever drop to a level of not being in a league or division to play for real national championships.

Agreed. It’s also not all or nothing. Football is obviously the easiest avenue to develop a national brand, but Rice (the only D1 school smaller than us, or at least used to be) became a national baseball darling for a while. They won the 2003 College World Series, which that combined with some really good years was/is enough to have someone like me somewhere like here talking about them 20 years later. It’s a smaller game/market, but again, it’s not all or nothing.

Hate to keep dwelling on it, but we missed a few outstanding opportunities in football the last few years to break more solidly into the national consciousness. Lots of fans are tired of the same old teams, and we would have been the darling of many who’d have pushed for us to crash the playoff party.

Yeah was rethinking that and forgot abt ECU. Think it goes UNC, State, Duke, App, ECU and us.
I need to see proof that Duke football is 3rd in the state in viewership. It’s pretty widely known that Duke basketball popularity doesn’t extend to football and their dogshit home attendance proves that.

So, does Currie start a national marketing campaign for “Your second favorite team!”?

This is also correct. I think as a “brand” we are 6th in the state. I’m just thinking about the amount of shirts, hats, car stickers, etc. I see on a daily basis. By viewership we are probably 3rd, but that’s for all eyes, not just those in NC.

The Clemson game last year still bothers me. Had we won that game.... well, you guys are smart. You know what would have happened.

We’ve weirdly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory quite often during the last few years, even though it’s been a good stretch for us historically.
