‘The Blind Side’ was a lie

The family each received 2.5% of the 300 million dollar proceeds of the movie, which equaled out to 4.5 million each. Michael received nothing. That in itself seems pretty scummy. Choosing a conservatorship and telling him he was part of the family is pretty scummy. I think those two actions combined show how they felt about him and about what they did.
Im too lazy to go back and read about it, but I thought it was 2.5% of some profit formula. Not the gross proceeds. Which means it was probably a very minimal number. But it’s not really that important.

I think there’s room to both be grateful that those specific rich people gave money to support a cause that I care about (Wake sports) and to acknowledge that most people that have that level of wealth are not as generous with their money as they easily could be.
I mean let’s be real here we all love Wake sports and all but there’s probably honestly like a million more worthwhile causes that their money could go to.

I think you’d end up surprised at how many people have a ton of wealth, are super generous and you’d never know they have money.

They just aren’t in the public eye
This is another box on the bingo card for me. Since the book and movie make Michael look like a docile, dumb giant and paint the Sandra Bullock lady out to be some football genius, they feel like the type of people who want to be in the public eye.

They could've been like the folks you mention and maybe all we would know about them is stuff from a 5 min interest piece in a random pregame show, but the product of the story is so favorable to them, at Oher's, Freeze's, et al. expense, I can't help but think they were always selling a product and treating this like business. And they are shrewd, successful business people.

I posted the answer to all of this within the first 10 posts of this thread.

I seem to remember that Oher wasn’t happy with the movie/book and its publicity when it came out and I always wondered why he agreed to it. I guess we know why now.

They owned like over 100+ fast foot restaurants and sold the majority of them for a big profit. They were not hurting for money. But do you want to be remembered for owning like 50 taco bells or the feel good story made into a movie? I think she became a motivational speaker as well. I don't think they owe him 15 million but i'm not buying the "gosh we just got that one-time small advance fee" line. They guy owned multiple businesses and real estate: there is no way he doesn't cut a good deal from the movie rights.

presumably somebody fact checked the book, though, even if Lewis didn't intentionally lie about the narrative in the book to cover his friends' asses.

for example, somebody undoubtedly checked to see if the family actually adopted Oher

Undoubtedly? That seems like something that wouldn’t require a fact check beyond asking the Tuohys and Oher. Maybe the lawyer gave some long answer about conservatorship as a form of adoption and Lewis just nodded his head. Who knows? But that doesn’t seem like something that would have heavily scrutinized at the time.

honestly "his own version of Grantland" ended up being his downfall

the undefeated pretty much imploded before it ever got up and running

Ironic name.

I think Big Mike is running a thirty-year con game on the Tuohys.

I think that's a fair question, but there are a couple of reasons I can imagine.

1) The movie came out and blew up right around when he got drafted, so there's a massive influx of money into his bank account and people taking care of paying agents, managers, his taxes, etc. so when his accountant says "ok, everything is squared away here's what we're putting in your account" the avg early 20-something-yo probably wouldn't give it another look. And the Tuohys def aren't going to point it out.

2) At some point he, or someone on his team, wised up to the missing money. Unpacking all of his contracts, payments, endorsement contracts, appearance fees, basically everything he has been paid for the last however many years takes time. Trying to figure what was paid out for the movie takes time too. These are the types of accusations you can't just start throwing around in the media unless you want to get sued yourself.

All of this is to say, a lag of some number of years to realize something sketchy is going on and then some time (maybe years) to piece together what happened and get receipts so you don't sued for accusing the family of stealing from you can account for a lot of time.
but is it not possible that Oher makes no money in his entire life (especially upwards of $40 MM) if the Tuohys dont help him. . . . ?!

yall are looking at this as an either or. No doubt Oher's life and opportunity was better because of the Tuohy's. now, we can question their motivations if you want, but to act like they screwed this kid is a stretch.

it also seems like very few on this board gives anyone with a genuine faith any credit either. sometimes people can be generous and do the right thing.

again, just questions, all are possibilities, and Oher is suing them now, so they should all expect the scrutiny. . .
