Official 2023 College Football Thread: Michigan Recognized as National Champions of Cheating !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

damn Cincy going from CFP to last place in the Big 12 in two years? I know they lost Fickell but are they going to be that bad?

OU's schedule is weak-- like the weakest I can remember. Barring injury, I think 9-3 is the floor for them. That should keep them in the running. They have a returning QB, and true freshman 5 star for depth. WR is a big question mark RB is very deep-- four guys who could start most places. OL may take a while to gel, but has potential to put it together in a big way. The D will determine this team's success, and I expect it to be much better. They're bigger in the trenches (a must for the move to the SEC). On average, they're like 10-12 lbs bigger than 2 years ago. That is not insignificant. Another year with their old S&C coach actually lifting and not doing kettlebell weights. Another year learning the defense. It was embarrassing watching other teams like Baylor wear them down and push them around the last few years (you can thank the S&C coach that FULR took with him to USC, and keep that in mind as USC enters their 2nd year with kettlebell man whipping them into shape and Grinch pushing for the smaller "speed D"). That should be over until they get to the SEC.

KSU and Taco Tech are the two schools outside of OU and TX getting love from Big XII insiders. I'll believe it when I see it with Tech. KSU will go as far as their QB will take them, but will be well coached like they usually are. Sark has never won 10 games in his career, and I'm not sure this year is the year to do so. Has Ewers made the next step in his development? He was mostly mediocre last year, and Manning isn't going to save the day if he falters (the other Texas backup is potentially really good, though). The Bama game will say a lot early on, and I don't think it will be close.

UCF likely the best of the incoming schools.

Great post. Southern Cal spent a lot of money bringing in guys to play on their defense. They brought in Bear Alexander who played D-line at Georgia and was a rotational player, which keeps everyone fresh and effective, and he had a good year. In their first game against San Jose State he played like 60 snaps and was obviously gassed while the Spartans ran for an average of 7.3 yards per play.

I know it's Texas, but I think this is their time, at least in the Big XII. Yeah, I think Alabama will bludgeon them in the trenches and that game will probably keep the Big XII from making the CFP.

Is Alex Grinch the most overhyped coordinator currently in CFB? Herb Hand could be under consideration for the award, but I don't think anyone tosses his name around as really exceptional. Pete Golding could be up there.

This guy had his number retired at FSU and is salty as hell that he didn't get offered the head coaching job with basically no experience.

He's showing what he learned at FSU by the way he is answering the question. It is very similar to the way FSU is treating the ACC.

Under 46.5 in UConn State seems like a fun one. State’s offense still shouldn’t be very good and UConn (despite improvement last year) still sucks and State’s defense is absolutely stout. Also think State -14.5 is a fine bet but between the two let’s go with the one that doesn’t require State’s offense to do anything

Seems like Kendall Briles held that title for a bit, was like a wannabe Kingsbury. He looked like a donk on the sidelines with the tape on his fingers.

I don't think he's overhyped because he doesn't have any real successes to hang his hat on. I do think he checks a lot of boxes as a guy who says all the right things to the media, etc. Having watched his defenses for a few years at OU, he marginally improved a very shitty OU D under Mike Stoops, but his focus (perhaps at the direction of FULR) was to build a "speed D"-- one that was smaller but compensated with speed. This was TCU's MO under Gary Patterson for many years because they played in a G5 and that is how they had to recruit. When TCU moved to the Big XII, they eventually steered clear of that philosophy, as did the entire conference in general, but not OU. Why FULR and Grinch didn't see this change, I don't know. FULR was too focused on offense, I guess. This and the S&C program geared toward "speed D" resulted in OU getting pushed around at the LOS on defense. They had talent, just not size or conditioning.

Big lack of discipline in the program, combined with marginal S&C is a bad recipe. Moreover, there have been rumblings that fundamentals in Grinch's D are shockingly lacking. When Venables came to OU, they found that the guys did not know basic coverage schemes or assignments that are taught in HS because they didn't use them under Grinch. I don't know if those rumblings are a matter of CYA or have a basis in truth, but watching the old Grinch Ds (and current ones) tends to lend those rumors credibility. Reading between the lines on podcasts when they talk about a lack of football IQ on the defensive side of the ball also lends it credibility. Last year they played with what was leftover from that, to include all the bad habits and fallbacks on those bad habits under adversity. This year there is another year in the system, a lot of the fluff gone. Something like 3/4 of the team now was not there when FULR bolted for USC.

I think Grinch will be gone after this year, perhaps for a HC gig at a marginal football school. FULR is NFL-bound, if not after this year then soon.

You have to have some hype if you get the coordinator jobs at Ohio State, OU, and USC. Doesnt mean he is any good though. Fast pace offenses want D-Coordinators who have experience with that stuff. I don't think Leach was too hurt when Grinch left though, he made a comment about how just keeps getting these D-Coordinators paid by big schools
