ATP: Electric Vehicles

What kind of towing ability does the RAV4 have? I'd love to be able to tow a small trailer 30 miles one way if needed.

I plan to put the OEM hitch on at some point, I think the prime RAV4 has a 2500 lb towing limit so would probably be good with that. The car has a lot of pep and is fun to drive (when you have battery power/are in hybrid mode at least).

I'm gonna mostly use mine for bike rack but plan on towing a jet ski occasionally.

So solid state batteries coming out in a few years per Toyota. 1,000 mile range on a 15 minute charge

sure I’ll believe it when they ship it

toyota has made a whole bunch of claims about battery technology and it’s always a few years away

It'll happen, just a matter of when (and maybe not 1000 miles, I've heard 750 range), I'd guess rollout closer to 2028.

So two years later I have a 150 lightning on order will be here in Oct. got extended range so we’ll see. So many Rivians suddenly around where I live. I like them but still just wish they were bigger - the truck is Ranger sized and a little uh dainty for my tastes.

And I stand by my review of Musk in the OP

Is your jet ski battery powered ?

I wonder when they're going to require companies to publish alternate charge life numbers, such as they do with city and highway mpg numbers. Charging life is always optimal, based on the perfect weather. I want to know what the charging life is going to be like during Texas summers and New England winters.

A 1000 mile charge life negates that need somewhat, but I too will believe it only when I see it.

Tons of Rivians where I live too (and VW ID4s, strangely). I like the Rivian SUV, but can't get past the headlights.

Also, hasn't Toyota been one of the companies that is most averse toward EVs?

Yeah, I think part of their PR strategy is to keep promising amazing things that are 3-5 years away so that people will keep buying their other cars and wait in an EV

and yet they're fucking killing the PHEV segment, I wish they'd come out with a prime tacoma and/or 4runner (or new landcruiser which is basically a 4runner)

I think this is the reason they only have one fully electric vehicle right now, and I think their plan has been to fully flesh out the solid state battery mass production and be the first out of the gate with it -- could work out well for them.

Those Rivian vertical oval headlights also strike me as very weird.

Full EV's need greater range batteries and faster charging. 1 hour charge time for 100 miles of range just doesn't work for long trips. Particularly when compared to 10 minutes for 500 miles for an ICE vehicle.

Say what? Surely you’re not thinking this is what EVs are limited to

Not what they're limited to, but a common parameter for charging. What's the best EV charging time you know of?

More to the issue, are there any that come close to ICE refueling time? 10 minutes for 500 miles range.

The lower model tesla (3) charges 175 miles worth in about 15 minutes at a supercharger, based on my experience. I know lots of people who have taken EVs on longer road trips and they're fine.

Also, most EVs can take me a significantly longer distance than I want to drive before peeing or getting snacks, so I don't see the problem here.

A few years ago I stopped at a big gas/convenience store on a 6 hour drive to get snacks and pee. Then left and got back on the interstate and ran out of gas after maybe a mile. Totally forgot to look at gas gauge at any point prior to stopping at a gas station. I might not be good with the Cybertruck I have on order.
