GT Game Thread

Gatech is not now and has never been my rival,

Weather will change 5 times before Saturday. I just need it to hold off in the morning for my MS bike ride.

Guardian Caps.

It's ... interesting, to me. Fall camp was the first time I saw WF players wearing the protective headgear -- basically helmet padding that's designed to reduce the effect of successive blows to the head. They're required in NFL training camp and practices with contact throughout the season.

Colleges are hit or miss. Look at pictures from some schools and you'll see every player other than QBs and kickers wearing them; others you'll see an even split of them; some you'll see none of them. Duke, for example, has every player wearing them other than QBs and kickers.

There were 6 WF players wearing them in the first practice and that number was down to 4 after a week. I wrote about it here. That Demond Claiborne quote at the end was [Bobby Portis EYEZ].

Since we've heard that a few of the absences in the first 3 games were because of concussions -- thanks, Thamel -- think it's fair to ask if more players are wearing them and if they should be required.

Of course, it proves the point that they're not 100% effective since Justice Ellison was wearing one throughout fall camp and missed the Vandy game with a concussion -- though there's also no confirmation he kept wearing it for practices during the week.
Thanks, Conor. Wish the WF staff would make them mandatory.

What are the Cons of the caps?
I've got no idea other than players think they look silly. I would imagine they might make your head a little hotter, but it's not like we heard about NFL players falling out with heat stroke throughout training camp.

Thanks, Conor. Wish the WF staff would make them mandatory.
I feel pretty strongly that they should be. But Clawson doesn't sound like he's going to make an issue of it when the medical personnel isn't saying it should be mandatory.

Two days after I wrote about them, Michael Jurgens -- who's had at least two concussions at WF -- was wearing one for the first time. I figured that was a win.

Big game for our students too.

All we have left is this one, FSU and NC State. No guarantees of a night game or warm weather for FSU and NCSU.

Once the drizzle stops Saturday, I anticipate a rowdy WFU student section - our team will respond very well!

We also play Pitt at home for homecoming

Looks like very light rain possible. As long as we’re not dealing with indefinite thunder delays.
Light rain and GaTech reminds me of a funny moment. I attended the ACC Championship game against GaTech in Jacksonville. My friend that went with me attended NCSU but is generally a big college sports fan and a good guy. Just prior to the game it was misting outside and we were walking through the concourse and overheard one Wake fan say to another "Man, if this weather keeps up I just don't see myself sitting out there through it". My buddy just looked at me and I shrugged and said "that's the Deacon fanbase in a nutshell"...

While other Deacon fans sit through Northern Illinois in 2001; tropical storm at Navy in 2010 (?); freezing my ass off at home against Miami, Maryland, I lost track.

@LilburnDeac - do you want to make this the game thread?

I think week looks pretty tough and will tell us a lot about how much the defense has improved under Lambert. The Deacs lead the ACC in sacks - but that is bolstered by a 10 sack effort against ODU. The GT line is pretty good - they are 20th in the nation in sacks allowed (and against Ole Miss and Louisville). They've put up points against all of their opponents and averaged over 500 yds a game of offense and its really balanced (avg. 310 yds/game through the air and 205 yds/game on the ground). Cooley and Haynes are both averaging over 6 yds a carry and King completes over 66% of his passes for 300 yds/game with a 9:1 TD:INT ratio. If we give GT time, they can put up a lot of points.

Their defense has been the Achilles heel for GT this year. Giving up 39 to Louisville and 48 to Ole Miss. We HAVE to fix our offensive issues from last game to do well in this game. They only have 1 sack and 3 defensive turnovers this year (of course ODU entered last week with 0 of each and left with 3 TOs and 4 sacks). They are giving up over 240 yds/game on the ground, so we'll see how they play us.

We'll see. I don't feel great about this one as it seems as if the step forward our defense has made is not equal to the step back our offense has made and I think we will need to score 40+ to win this one.
