Questions about a possible visit to WFU Football Game

Charlotte - NASCAR Hall of Fame. It really is cool even if that’s not your thing. That’s the only thing I recommend in Charlotte other than the whitewater center. Charlotte blows.

Raleigh - always a ton going on. Art museum is cool. Plenty of outdoors stuff to do. Science museum is cool too.

Winston - definitely go to WF campus. Your kid may very well fall in love with it instead of Duke/UNC. That’s what happened to me. Went to Winston on a trip to see Carolina and Duke. Ended up falling in love with Wake. Plenty of other things to do. NC has a lot of outdoor activities and that’s my main thing so Pilot Mountain.
Lol. You’re visiting Raleigh ? You’ve got to check out our fourth tier science museum of no historical significance !!

Wait, are you flying into RDU and out of CLT or driving all over the place?
Flying Thursday-Sunday in and out of Charlotte. Driving up to Raleigh for a night and hoping to loop back through to the WF game on the way back to Charlotte.
Probably seems like a lot of driving, but my son and I both like road trips and I like seeing the countryside. Plus the distances there are not much compared to what we have to drive to get places in the midwest. Minneapolis to Chicago or KC are 7 hours each, for example.

We do like science museums but have been to many (some world class) over the years so we will probably not do any on this trip.

Is there much of a tailgating scene? Would be curious just to see what it looks like.
Students tailgate in/around the tennis courts (I think still). Other than that, there is a visitors parking lot next to the basketball stadium where there will be some setups, and then a huge parking lot complex next to the football stadium with varying lots where everybody with passes tailgates.

I wouldn't call it a "scene" compared to other schools, but folks definitely tailgate.

Thanks for all the replies. Any Revolutionary War or Civil War sites that are also near some of those parks and worth visiting?
Guilford Courthouse is in Greensboro (about 30 minutes from Wake). Pretty pivotal battle where Cornwallis lost 25% of his troops, shifting his attention to Va, which ultimately led to his surrender at Yorktown.

I have worked within a few blocks of the nascar hall of fame for a good portion of my career and have never been there. That place is an albatross.

But yeah I guess go if you really like nascar. And I think they have a Buffalo Wild Wings or something.

I sense some pessimism about the team. My Gopher team is in a similar place after blowing a huge lead to a bad Northwestern team last weekend.

I realize you're joking but I may just pick up some WF gear while we're there (assuming the game time works for us). I don't really have strong feelings about either team, but Pitt's coach seems like kind of a tool so I'd be happy to cheer against him (plus it's more fun to cheer for the home team).

Just kidding, but yes pessimism to say the least. Yes, the Pitt coach is kind of a tool, so we appreciate the support. Hope you get to make it.

Having spent many years in both cities, this cracked me up.

Tons of great breweries in NC, if that’s your thing. Many with cool outdoor spaces and solid food. Recommend Hanging Rock State Park over Pilot Mountain for outdoors.
I feel like it’s the truth. I’ve lived in both also. Example: Charlotte downtown shuts down at 5

It’s fun. Still better than anything Charlotte has. Tour the bank buildings and then be surprised when there are 0 people downtown after 6 PM?

lol just checked the website. What the hell happened. did they get sued?

Pitt's coach is a tremendous tool. And their fans are assholes.

Charlotte sounds a little bit like St. Paul. Quiet downtown that doesn't have much going on at night. Minneapolis is the more busy downtown here (although compared to a city like Chicago is still pretty quiet at night).

If I started a "Who hates Iowa" "we hate Iowa" chant at the game will you guys join in?
It's a fun tradition we have when we are playing teams not named Iowa.

Bennett Place in Durham is the site of the last surrender of a major Confederate army during the Civil War. So it's a significant site historically speaking, but if you've toured major battlefields before it'll be kind of underwhelming.

I’m in, as long as we can add UNC to it.

In Durham the Duke Lemur Center is p cool. Largest population of lemurs anywhere in the world outside of Madagascar.

Whoever suggested the Angus Barn is off. Don't waste the time or money. I've had better steaks at Ruth's Chris.
