WF @ VT (10/14), 3:30PM on ACC Network

From a NIL meeting last winter, aboard member who I feel certain knows what he is talking about, at final interview Elko said he would come to Duke if given 1000000 for NIL immediately. Was granted and he bought 10 linemen at 100000 each and they are the difference makers. Strong o and d lines can control and disrupt other teams.
Really? Because ON3 only lists two Duke football lineman receiving significant NIL, and they both had been at Duke for several years https://www.on3.com/nil/rankings/player/nil-100/?team-key=13002 In addition, there are several transfers listed on the Duke roster on the DL and OL, but they are from Harvard, Penn, Brown, Georgetown, and even smaller schools. There are only 2 from P5 schools (Stanford and ND) and the ND player transferred in 3 years ago, before Elko arrived.

Only giving what I heard, the source should be believable, I do not follow Duke football but several were grad transfers it was intimated meaning they would have played last year, not trying to make an issue, just saying what I was told.

I can confirm this and believe it is not a rumor. Elko made significant demands of Duke with the purse strings. Now, precisely how many players he brought in? I can't confirm. But Duke has a very strong NIL going at the moment. This according to Wake resources who have been in attendance at the few meetings I could make.

And I believe was fired after only one year? Maybe fired before the end of the season?
Was he out of his league? A cup of coffee is not the same as multiple experiences at multiple big time programs. I shouldn't have randomly listed Tennessee without remembering Clawson's short stay. N.D. would have been a better choice, and a place where Elko was successful.

FWIW, would guess a substantial portion of Duke's NIL money devoted to linemen went to keep Graham Barton at Duke. He's a 4 year starter on the Duke OL and is a projected late first round early second round pick in 2024. On the open NIL market Barton would get deep into the six figures from everyone. Guessing Duke had to pony up to keep him from leaving for a huge payday from another school. As horrendous a coach as Cut was in his later years at Duke, he left some talent behind for Elko, who knew how to use it.

Why did we get such a late start with our collective? I guess it might not matter much in the long run if we're able to catch up, but that is disappointing and the kind of thing I would not have expected under the current regime.

Top Hat Collective was first, but appeared to burn up on the launch pad.

Easy NIL solution-- commit fraud and take those funds for the redevelopment of Deacon Blvd to put in the NIL pot

Oh, I don't doubt you at all. I do question what we hear from coaches and the collectives regarding NIL, in general, though (not just Wake, everywhere). They have a ton of motivation to make each school seem like they are behind and about to lose the NIL race - it's one of the main ways they motivate people to give. When I hear NIL claims, I often like to go to the source data to see if they make sense.

In my opinion, Duke is good because they have a good coach, not because of NIL. Elko was great at ND, A&M, etc. Remember his defenses at Wake? They were fantastic, and our defense quickly fell apart when he left.

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about Elko staying at Duke. He has shown that he is willing to move every few years, and despite having a great team, Duke's fan support for football is pitiful.

I think Elko is gone this off-season. Guy has proved it at a high level in major programs and has shown that he can run a program successfully. Michigan state particularly looks like a natural fit.

I think almost certainly. Our main issue this year, in my opinion, is QB play. But Hartman was leaving Wake no matter what. He told the coaches that before the year started. He was a student at Wake for 5 years (plus summers) - he had taken all the classes and done everything there was to do as a student athlete. We got 5 years of Hartman playing QB - hard to ask for anything more than that.

And the coaches did not look for replacement QB in the portal. They thought we were set at the QB position. So again, hard to blame that on NIL.
Hartman said he would return to Wake for a million dollars. Notre Dame took that seriously.

Floating a legit offer to Hartman would have been 100% worth it, even if he was unlikely he would accept. I don't remember the timing of when @RollTheQuadNIL starting, but think it was towards the middle to end of the last fall season. Maybe things weren't in place yet to do so.

The narrative that the coaching staff was 100% ready to move on seems absurd in hindsight. That is bad messaging that we should try to change. It would have been better if we were in a bidding war with ND, even if we lost, so its clear we are open for business.

Really? At the beginning of the year he announced it would be his last season at Wake. On November 15, 2022, when asked if he would return he said, "no shot" before the question could even be completed.

RTQ can perhaps confirm or deny this rumor. I have heard from a fairly reliable source that SMU has raked in a shit-ton of money (north of $50 million) for their NIL since being announced they are joining the ACC. Again, my source heard this directly from an SMU person associated with their athletic program and not second hand. Just imagine the frothy number of dollars in a market like Dallas. You get a few folks who want to win college football games? Welp!
Any time NIL gets mentioned on PTI, Kornheiser comments on SMU and how amazed he is at the $100MM or so number he's heard tossed around.

Roll the Quad was formed November 23, 2022

(I doubt he would have stayed and I’m not commenting on the $1 million quote. it’s worth providing the context)
