Conference Expansion: Stanford, California and SMU Join the ACC

Virginia just baffles me. I get it's to have a presence in the state, but that fanbase seems about as unpassionate as it gets.

They only have to be passionate enough to pay some nominal monthly fee in large numbers. That's what it comes down to now: which "properties" can deliver the largest passive subscriber base.

if they're looking for passive fans then yeah I can see the appeal of UVA

I give it about one or two more years tops before FSU is gone, if they can find a landing spot. They'll workout the buyout and the network and conference will workout the GOR.

yeah I think the most likely result is not that a team will find a way to break the GOR, but that someone will actually come up with the money to buy themselves out of it.

What is the incentive for ABC/ESPN or the ACC to "workout" the GOR to allow FSU to leave?

Sure - But in exchange for devaluing your primary asset(s) and opening that pandora's box which most likely leads to further (and more rapid) devaluation?
Will they have a choice? If FSU has the money and the desire to leave, can the ACC force them to stay?

I don't know the answer to this, but I think the issue - in addition to the buyout money - is that the ACC still retains your media rights even if you buy out the contract correct? So not only do you need the money to get out you also need money to help offset the lost media rights, plus does the SEC want FSU (at all in general but also) if they aren't getting FSU's media rights until 2037?

Maybe I misunderstand the situation though and the buyout gives you your rights back? I haven't looked at the contract in a while

I cant' understand why ESPN would want to pay more to have F$U in the SEC. They already have them in the ACC on the "cheap". Why pay more to just move the deck chairs around?

It also seem to me that it would behoove ESPN to make the ACC more financially competitive to keep it in the network family or risk losing school and ultimately the entire conference to the Big 12 (fox) and the Big 10 (CBS).

Swofford was a Tarhole in sheep’s clothing no doubt but at least he was looking out for a school. I hate them but ACC conference is Carolina’s to keep afloat or not. UVA doesn’t have the brand they have. FSU and Clemson are already in states where SEC has a presence. I don’t think Miami is a nearly as big of a draw as they would have been 20 years ago. They’re a very distant 5th in my mind followed by VT/State then “the rest”

Virginia may not the most passionate fan base, but it's still a large fan base - though VT's is roughly the same size and a bit more passionate. But I agree that the SEC wanting UVA is a head scratcher. It does get you a bunch of VA tv markets, but nobody watches UVA football, and the quality of UVA football ain't improving anytime soon. Whereas, UNC is good in football, premier in hoops, and you'd bring in the entire state as a market.

VT would have more attractive than UVA 20 years ago in hey day of Beamer Ball

And why would schools/teams want to leave a conference to just become punching bags to Alabama, UGA, Michigan, Ohio State, etc? Do they really think the playing field will be leveled?

I think that UVa is up there because North Carolina and Virginia are the only large states on the east coast that don't have an SEC or Big 10 school.
Correct. SC and FL already have teams in the SEC. Now, the Big[whatever] might want Clemson and FSU, unless there already is a plan for a giant top tier conference/league of SEC/Big[] teams.

It doesn't matter if anyone watches. They just need the TV market
