2023-2024 NCAA Men's Basketball Thread

Jacksonville and Robert McCray V pulled the biggest upset of the conference tourney season so far. They were the 10 seed in the ASUN tourney and won the tourney opener over #8 Kennesaw State on Monday. Then, last night, Jacksonville upset the #1 seed Eastern Kentucky (coached by AW Hamilton) on the road. McCray had 24 points 4 boards and 4 assists. Jacksonville will now play #3 seed Stetson tomorrow in the semis. FWIW, the ASUN #2 seed Lipscomb also lost last night. With the top two seeds already cooked, the remaining ASUN teams are:

#211 Stetson
#231 Austin Peay (lets go Peay!)
#250 N. Alabama
#275 J'ville

It's now a very real possibility that Robert McCray will get to the NCAAT. Would not be shocked to see McCray back on a Power Conference roster next year, and certainly by 2025. Kid has a lot of talent.
Go back to the roster construction thread where I made the same point and people said he wouldn't have contributed.

The top 2 KP "Lines of the Night" were:

McCray (Jacksonville) - 36pts, 4rebs, 2asts (5-8 from 3) - Former Demon Deacon
Carlson (Utah) - 40pts, 7rebs, 2asts (5-10 from 3) - The dude that torched us when we played them

Both in losses.

Lack of a point guard rotation has really hurt us this year, but McCray must have preferred to start at a lower level vs playing backup in the ACC. Still a frustrating transfer.

Unfortunately, this story is going to stain March Madness. There was an unusual amount of action on UAB last night against Temple. Causing the line to move from UAB -2.5 to -8. The game was flagged by the authorities before tip-off (this is not the first time with unusual betting patterns on a Temple game in 2024). UAB won 100-72 and outrebounded Temple 41-19. Wouldn't be shocked if Temple shuts-down its season. People will be going to jail. With sports gambling now legal, any spikes in betting patterns are always instantly spotted. Those involved in this are beyond stupid to think they were going to get away with this:

I had that game on the multiview in the background last night and thought to myself about how much Temple seems to have fallen off. Also, with the exponential in sports gambling, I can only imagine this sort of thing is going to crop up more often.

Should be an interesting start to a trend where players are paid immediately for winning. If there are any concerns about getting your team’s best effort, dangle a million dollar prize for the winner and watch the effort levels.

That comes out to around $10K a player on 7 teams and $85K on the winning team. We’ll see if that’s enough to move the needle for big time programs.

Not sure of your math. It says the program can distribute how they please, but hypothetically if your program only gave it to the 13 scholarship players, then it would be more like $77k (losers) & $155k for winners. I’m sure it would get divided up by more than 13, but a nice payday for a college kid in one lump sum nonetheless.

$1,000,000 divided by 13 players x 8 teams (104 players) = $9,615.
$1,000,000 divided by 13 players on the winning team = $76,923.
