WFU Hoops: '24-'25 Roster Construction Thread: (-) Carr, Monsanto, Ituka, Clark, Miller, Marsh, Keller, Canka / (+) Spillers, Biliew, Cosby

Even if Sallis leaves, which is my expectation, we could have our best group of returning players in so many years I would need a calculator to figure it. We still need a big so our defense/rebounding does not fall off a cliff when Reid is on the bench. Also a guard.

If all this falls into place we must schedule better. That is probably a separate thread. I would be fine with playing an away game against a MWC team expected to be good. Will Mississippi State be decent next year? Forbes is friends with their coach. Do a home and home.

All of those were first rounders if not mistaken so a bit different than a guy in high 2nd in most mocks.

Bryant Crawford and Doral Moore are a couple other guys who left early and didn’t even get drafted. Curse of Tim Duncan.

Did I see someone mention our participation in the Thanksgiving tourney at Disney? Is that confirmed somewhere? Something like that and a few Top 100 non-conference games can go far. You get a lot more credit for winning one or two of those games than you get dinged for losing them.

This is the conversation I'm most interested in having for next year. The nonconference scheduling of this year did not help us, and the only reason our metrics got to the height they did was that we won multiple ACC games by 25+, which shouldn't be a relied upon strategy.

My preference would be to do what MWC teams do and avoid 250+ NET teams like the plague. If you want to go the route Wake did this year with playing a bunch of weak teams (which is what the B12 does), you need to absolutely blow them the hell out. Scheduling teams like NJIT, Charleston Southern, and Delaware State is only acceptable if you are prepared to win by 50. Winning those games by 25 does more harm than good.

I mean whether they came back or not, those Danny Manning teams were still gonna suck. So hard for me to blame guys like that (Dinos is another one) in that era.

The other part of this is you are much less subject to luck. There's always the chance, though, that your non-con goes sideways like Pitt's did with Oregon State, Missouri, and WVU all being crappier than expected.

Looking through some of the mock NBA drafts and considering how Sallis finished the year, I can't imagine he won't drop a bit. I can see him falling to more of a mid 2nd round. Historically Wake hasn't kept players in that scenario, but we've also never had a legitimate NIL program or such a solid roster returning. And if these guys really enjoy playing together and for Forbes, maybe Sallis and Carr agree to both come back.

This won't happen but it's nice to imagine.

I think the ideal scenario for a nonconference schedule for a team like Wake is to get 3-4 Q1 games, 3-4 Q2 games, and then 4-5 Q3/Q4 games. But make the Q3/Q4 games teams that are more likely to be Q3/upper Q4 than lower Q4.

In order to get multiple Q1 games, you need to schedule aggressively. That means either a few games against blue bloods that are highly likely to be Q1 or 5+ games against teams with a reasonable chance to be Q1. That way you don't have to worry the way Wake did that their one high end game (Florida) falls out of Q1.

If PFred can make a similar leap as Cam from year 1 to year 2, we could have a couple of pests defending the back court.

Absolutely. By the end of the year, I thought Pfred was one of our better defenders (positioning wise) and working hard. His biggest problem was he was outmuscled by some of the guys that he had to guard. Our Strength and Conditioning should help rectify that. I think his jump from Freshman to Sophomore is going to be even bigger than Cam's was.

I also agree that Cam left it all on the floor, and doesn't get nearly enough credit for everything he does for the team. I'd take 5 guys that play that hard on any team, in any sport.

Sorry to rain on the parade but unless Forbes finds another 1st team acc player then we are worse off and will not be better unless he can find 2 all ACC players then we could be better. Parker could improve but not a lot of optimism for Keller and Marsh and the others you are going to get what we know they provide which is good on O and bad on D unless Forbes bring in a proven coach. Could a frosh like Juke be an all ACC player? Possibly but Forbes has yet to develop a hs recruit so not counting on it. Keeping Hunter is huge to make noise next year otherwise we will have a repeat of this year at best. Love Forbes as fun guy, but his value is finding stars in portal so hopefully he and staff do that again effectively.

nothing is more meaningless than asking a player right after a game, particularily a loss, if they are coming back next year. Whatever he says at that moment good, bad. or indifferent is completely meaningless.

My bet is that having to travel more with Cal, Stanford, and SMU in the conference, we'll be more likely to stay regional out of conference. Still, we could totally do a quick road swing (at Dayton, Xavier, or Cincy/ at Miss St., Memphis, for example).

No one asked him if he was coming back

Reid, Carr, Cam, Boopie, Parker would be the most impactful returning group we've had in over a decade. Plus Juke. Plus the portal magic Forbes pulls every year. Add a guard and a big and we've got our 8 man rotation. Development by Keller, MMM, or Clark and we go 9 or 10 deep.
