Conference Expansion: Stanford, California and SMU Join the ACC

Vandy and Northwestern not leaving SEC or Big 18.
They will when there ain't no more SEC and Big Whatever. The big players aren't going to want to keep splitting the pie with the low contributors. I think we end up with a college football landscape that looks something like the English football league concept with 4 or 5 tiers. I'm hoping we make at least the 2nd tier. The other sports will continue with a format similar to today.

I think you'll eventually see tiered revenue in the big leagues. Basically the longhorn network all over again.

When you really think about it, that's what we've had all along. We've had a promotion system. But instead of straight up wins and losses, it has been based on geography and tradition. That's what motivated conference expansion. That's how we got where we are.

The next step will be the super league that European fans rejected. That's how we'll get the baby NFL or whatever.

If you think the NCGA is going to lift a finger to make sure Wake Forest winds up in the B1G or SEC, you really need to refocus; especially if you think they would somehow tie it to any action taken by UNC-CH.

I don’t think NCGA can get us in the SEC/BIG, but as far as concrete actions Wake can do right now to help position itself for whatever is coming, I think one of those is building the case that it’s better for [reasons] for the Big 4 to remain in the same conference, whatever that may be. Wake does have some political power, certainly some economic influence in the piedmont triad.

Seems contradictory to say it's better for the Big Four to stay in the same conference but for the love of God keep ECU and App out.

We should really put trust in politicians - they've shown over the years that they don't follow the money and change their tune on issues depending on who is cutting the check, unlike those greedy Athletic Directors!

We’re not asking for a radical change, just that the status quo be maintained. I think that’s an easier ask.

Anyway, my whole point in posting this was in response to criticism that Wente and Currie aren’t doing anything, as evidenced by typical PR-speak releases. First, I’m not sure what these critics expect Wake to be doing (genuinely curious for ideas, beyond lobbying like hell) and second, I’m not sure how it’s in Wake’s best interest to speak publicly about the specific stuff they are doing behind the scenes.

I agree. But I think that was a particularly poorly worded statement.

More than some I'd say.... I'm wondering if some of these posters questioning that Wake has any regional pull have been to Winston since they've graduated? The Winston of 20 yrs ago is drastically different than the Winston of today and that's largely due to Wake's influence. Take a walk downtown and you notice that influence quite ubiquitously. Wake also has good connections through alumnus and donors. I guess we'll see soon how good wakes admin really is.

Wake would be actually in an excellent position had we had more bball success. We're in a growing market (1.7 million in Piedmont Triad) in a booming state and don't have to split a city with other P5 schools. Had we maintained basketball and continued the trajectory of football after ACC championship game, I think we'd have much more advantageous positioning even with a smaller alumni base.

Little did we know Ron Wellman may have not only fucked us out of quality basketball but also out of a P5 conference

That will happen by default. Just the way numbers work. What matters is how many subscribers schools can deliver. Eventually a UCF is more valuable than a Vanderbilt.

True, but Texas ain't gonna be happy being a "really great 6-5" team in a league full of elite programs. They need some guaranteed W's . I guess Arkansas, Missouri, and Maryland all had hopes of becoming elite in their bigboy conferences but they are not, which is your point. Which brings us back to "don't care, got paid," but to what end?

These mega conferences are going to recreate their old conferences with regional divisions.

Brian Kelly suggested that college football do away with conferences all together: everybody is independent. There would be no need to share revenue (or give opponents a much smaller %). No set scheduling. I guess the major teams would get network contracts like Notre Dame/NBC, but the rest would be PPV, or regional (Jefferson Pilot, ACCNX) productions.

Yeah, we need our Republican legislature to stand up and get in the way of the market working the way it wants to.

Texas will likely have very little say when their schedule is made based on TV content. Once we get to that point, what leverage do they have over the networks?

Hence my feeling that life in mega conferences will likely suck for those not making the money.

.
Won't happen obviously , but the legislture would come closer to requiring UNC and NCSU form a conference that includes ECU, Charlotte, and APP, than they would do anyting to help privates Wake and Duke.

Sounds like a pretty thorough article.

Maybe we should call the schools not mentioned in the article "The Excluded 8".

After the next round of conference realignment, those 8 schools could add OR State and WA State to the group and form a new conference called the Excluded 10 Conference or EX10, for short.
