Deacs v. Spiders Game Thread

RECRUITING

There are four players in North Carolina with whom we are involved.

Freeman, Gill, Meeks, and McClinton. We need to sign some people.

Chenault definitely needs to go and maybe Green and Fields.

We have to recognize that this is the least talent WAKE has ever put on the floor. Ever.

I disagree with you about Green. When he matures physically, he's going to be far better than Tony Woods, while giving us a lot of the same stuff Tony allegedly gave us.

I definitely see either Fields or Chennault transferring, but a lot of that, I think, depends on these Newell rumors and the Gill recruitment. McClinton is a pure wing at this stage.

Yep.

You're really the worst kind of fan, DV7. There are plenty of reasons to criticize this team and this game but you haven't spoken to any of them.

What stands out to me is that we came out flat and our off-the-ball movement was pretty lousy (which is equal parts TC-not-seeing and our guys not moving). Our defensive rotations were also miserable for most of the Richmond run and even down the stretch, which again seems equally because of bad awareness and guys not knowing where they need to be. A team like Richmond, which runs a very set-heavy half-court offense, is going to make us look like that if we're not maximizing our potential on defense.

Bzz in particular deserves credit for motivating these guys and making a stagnant offense look less stagnant. He also deserves credit for his substitutions. All excellent.

Blowing that timeout was bad, though, and possibly cost us the game. So, too, did our seeming lack of preparation to contain the little guy in the first half.

All in all, I'm happy that we fought back and this should serve as a motivational tool for us moving forward when we fall behind early.

Yep. I'm a horrible fan.

Continue to be satisfied by something that can only be described as sub-mediocre from the head coach and think of yourself as a super fan. It's working.

It is hard to neat any team when you only have two scorers. When we get 10-12 points from a third body we have a chance. Today only two guys showed up to play. TC is not the answer at PG-- how many layups and Fts has the guy missed. Nikita should sit and would if we had more than 8 scholarship layers,

You're leaving his Viduretta like speed out of the equation.

How could I forget??? Nikita is seriously the worst. I wish that there was another option.

Serious question for the undergrads, who is the best intramural player over 6'4 and is he/she better than Nikita?

Well, I agree, Bz isn't on the level of those coaches. But those coaches couldn't take the team Bz inherited and make them a top 15 team either. We aren't on the level of UNC or UK because we don't have the talent, not necessarily because of Bz.

That depends on what you think our problems are. It seems to me that McKie cj Fischer and possibly even fields are good at times. Our problems seem to be hustle an lack of inside presence. A good coach with a smaller team makes sure they can outrun their opponents for the whole game and shoot free throws and not implement an offensive system where are "bigs" end up out at the 3 point line ensuring that we will fail at rebounding

LOL if what I heard is correct, the kids that showed up at tryouts for the team were miserable

TC, Carson and Chase didn't show up to play. We threw that game away. We were better than them and we pissed that one away. The only defense I have is that Wake hoops teams have struggled mightily the week before exams. Such is life. On the flip side, UR has exams Monday and they had to travel, so shame on us. No excuse.

Very pissed off about the lack of effort from several guys. Travis and CJ showed up, but not much else. Thought we would have learned that from the ASU game. Guess not. Hopefully TC, Chase and Carson are running lots of wind sprints later this afternoon. They certainly didn't break a sweat playing in a game today. Fucking pitiful effort. Mentallly and physically.

It's not going to get better for awhile, so you can either just troll around and s**t and p**s all over a group of hardworking, underskilled players who unfortunately happen to represent our team OR you can give credit where credit is due and realize that we're not going to good for awhile.

I just don't know how anybody can give Bzz s**t for his coaching this time around. Outside of the TO, he did a really good job getting us back into it.

Bzz'out, Bzz'out, Rabble, Rabble, Rabble....

Green does not have a clue how to play. He needs to be redshirted next year if he stays. He is a good student and you want to have a couple of spots for guys to develop. But wiht Washington and Cavanaugh and Green. that seems one too many.

Tony is tough and plays hard but the cold hard fact is that he is not going to get any better and is not ACC caliber. Fields may be.

We are basically a seven man team at this point as Daniel is a project who might be a significant player three years from now.

It's clear why TC's high school ranking dropped considerably the more scouts saw him. He'd be an OK Southern Conference PG but he isn't ACC material.

Carson is gradually improving, had the good game vs. Nebraska and a good first half today, but disappeared completely in the second half. Still a year away from being a servicable ACC center.

Anthony is a pure PG but not a scoring threat to this point.

Chase is becoming well known with his shooting so got extra attention today. This will continue. I'm not sure he even got a three point shot attempt today. He's got strengths and he'll be a solid player, but not a superstar until his Sr. year, if then.

Nikita offers very little as we know.

That leaves CJ and Travis who are playing their hearts out.

This team is talent shy and anyone who can't see this is either ignorant or willfully ignorant. I'm glad to see the effort we're giving, the gradual progress of players, and playing as a team.

No coach living or dead could win much more than 13-14 games this year with this team. All we can do is lay the foundation for when we have talented players and see what happens.

And dv7 is a disgrace for a person and fan.

Green has a very good motor, which is a good thing to have if you're 6'10 with a big wingspan. I don't agree that he has no clue how to play - I actually think his general awareness is quite good. He always gets to where he needs to be. He's just unskilled. Maybe redshirting is the answer, but I'd guess he's a warrior in the offseason and gets a lot better.

I mean, neither TC nor Fields are ACC-caliber. I don't care how good Fields looked in spurts today. It's simply not going to happen. I don't even know if either are good enough to play PG on a legit-mid-major.

Even a halfway intelligent coach should always, always put a squad on the court that is in excellent conditioning shape and can hit free throws. And it's amazing how much those two things matter in every single game

Look at the recruiting thread, but Newell is rumored to want to transfer to Wake after a solid start at Oklahoma. He's an athletic combo-guard from Charlotte via Philly who was recruited by Capel.

I am sure that Coach K or Roy could get more out of this team b/c they are hall of famers. We do have some solid players as you mentioned. But there is no way on earth that this team has the talent to be a top 15 team, I don't care who is coaching. We don't have the inside game at all necessary to compete with the elite consistently. Our pg play is sub-par at best. We have 8 scholarship players on our roster which is unheard of. I sincerely believe we are heading in the right direction, though it isn't going as fast as any of us would like.

We shot well from the line today and seemed to be in good condition. I'm trying to find the knock on Buzz in your post. Did I miss it?
